On a recent RCI cruise gratuities were compulsory if you opted for my time dining.

Reading some of the replies it would appear that we will always have the people who say that they always remove tips because they won't be told who and when to tip, but we always tip more than the recommended amount! Phooeee. We don't believe you. This is held up to a degree when it is stated don't cancel the gratuities early in the cruise because your service gets worse, how do I deal with poor service when I have been charged tips? You are tight, mean minded people who will always find excuses for not paying up. I bet you are always the last one into the bar as well. ....Neil

ps Mrs Hargreaves I do not necessarily include you in this but I do get fed up with some peoples attitude.

Sorry Neil and Ida. i have always read and appreciated your comments but this time you are wrong. On the P&O Azura for Christmas and New year our Cabin Steward and Waiters were absolutely fantastic worked very hard ALWAYS obliging to please, we not only gave them more than we needed to for Gratuities in an envelope but also gave them £20 each in a Christmas card on Xmas day as a Xmas present as they were away from their families at Christmas and we wanted to cheer them up, well they were certainly very happy and surprised to receive it and to see their happy faces really made our day. So not everyone is tight and mean minded and does not give them a measly few pounds I am sure a lot of people simply want to give them tips they deserve as I have read some people complaining about their stewards or waiters and if they are as bad as they say why should they get a big tip?

You are, of course, quite right. I was pushing my luck somewhat because there are, unfortunately, many who fall into the category I described but there are many who do not.

What I was trying, and possibly failing, to do was to alert the skinflints that we know what they are about but by doing that people who are scrupulous in their dealings were automatically dragged into the net.

I apologise and will try to phrase my answers in a more correct fashion in the future. Regards. .....Neil

Neil "The man who knows everything about nothing and nothing about everything" that is what you are becoming. We always tip who we want to tip and will not be told by "nobodies" like you what to do. We rarely go into bars because of loud mouthed people like you propping up the bar wearing their favourite football shirt, lager louts I believe is what you are called. You and your sort are a disgrace to the UK and a laughing stock when you are overseas. Get real and stop being so self opinionated and only comment on what you know about ,which does nt appear to be very much.

Dear "disgruntled of Gosnells”,

Are you always so sure that you are prepared to make wild assumptions concerning people you know nothing of? We would all like to share this wonderful insight you must have. Just because someone holds and states something that you disagree with it would appear that you have the right to turn them into your arch-enemies and hold forth at length with invective that would certainly fit one of those you seem to be describing.

Can I just ask how many questions you have answered on here? I wonder if this extensive knowledge that you have is being shared, without invective, amongst the avid readers of these pages, it would be interesting to know. This is me, getting real, and commenting on one of the subjects I know about. .....Neil

We expect the gratuities to be added daily. As I understand it this is not mandatory, but I'm too lazy to start my holiday standing in a huge queue on the first day of my holiday to have this charge removed from my bill and all crew members are covered. However we met a couple recently who get these charges removed immediately and then give their cabin steward a healthy tip on the first day and don't tip anyone else.
Answer by mckee, portland (04 Feb 10 17:14) to a QUESTION by Hargreaves (03 Feb 10 22:11)
we always ask for gratuities to be removed from our account on princess cruises, the reason being that we want to tip our waiters and cabin steward ourselves and perhaps bar staff who served us throughout the cruise. on speaking to a lot of fellow cruises we discovered that a lot of people do this. i do know that there are lots of staff who are paid a good wage but have often wondered how the tips added to onboard accounts are actually divided and when you opt to do your own tipping, who is dipping out? I know that stewards and waiters are very badly paid and rely on tips. Hazel
Answer by Maurice Lamberth, Gosnells (04 Feb 10 00:16) to a QUESTION by Hargreaves (03 Feb 10 22:11)
We came off Diamond in November after doing the Asian Cruise- Bangkok to Beijing and gratuities were added daily but we asked for them to be removed and had this done straight away, no questions asked. If you are going to do this, do it as late as you can, even the last day as they inform your cabin steward and wait staff what you have done. Friends of ours had theirs removed on the 3rd day and the service went down hill from then onwards. If you are going on the same cruise that we were on and want any information ask and I will try and help you. Regards Maurice Lamberth.
