Does your “friend” want to avoid paying their tips altogether? That is the reason that this frequent question is asked, but never in such a direct way. It is a lot easier for them to leave the tips on the account than having to give cash at the end of the cruise; I have come across a lot of people who do that, I hope "your friend" is not one of them as the staff work very hard for their tips/wages.
Thought it was best to ask a direct question rather than beat around the bush. I do not like you implying that I am asking the question rather than "my friend". If you don't know the circumstances it is very unwise to assume you know the reasons!!!! Happy cruising.
I can see your point but if there are half the number of staff as there are passengers that equates to each staff member getting $24 each day before they get their pay. Does this mean that we are paying their wages as well as NCL or do they not get much pay? I would prefer it was part of the price then you would not know that you were giving a tip as well as paying 15% service charge on drinks!!
Only if you find the service to be rubbish! here is the quote from their website:
'If there is a service issue can the service charge be adjusted on board?
Guest satisfaction is the highest priority at Norwegian Cruise Line. We have structured a guest satisfaction programme designed to handle any concerns about service or on-board product quickly and efficiently. However, in the event a service issue should arise during your cruise please let our on-board reception desk staff know right away, so that we can address it in a timely manner. It is our goal to reach a satisfactory solution to any issue when it happens and make sure our guests can focus on enjoying their cruise. Should your concerns not be met with satisfaction you can adjust the charges.*
*Where your service charge has been pre-paid before departure, refunds are not available on board and you must apply for a refund, if applicable, after your return home by writing to our Guest Relations department.'
I have just returned from a cruise on the Norwegian Epic and had the tips removed. They didn't like doing this but I just filled in a form and I advised that I would tip who I wanted to tip. If you go early into the cruise they advise you to come back on the day before departure.
I am sure you will enjoy your cruise with NCL as we did and would cruise with them again.
It's a contentious issue. In a nutshell, the $12 per day "tips" are instead of wages. They are pooled & shared amongst the hotel side of the crew, including backroom staff that you never see such as laundry staff & bottle-washers. If the $12 "tips" are removed or reduced, those who you tip individually are obliged to put those tips into the pool, so you will not be tipping individually. ............ do you think that's the way it should be? If you don't, please don't shoot me, I'm only the messenger ......... Chris.
