Haycock - Answered a Question by Head (03 Aug 08 09:05)

It depends on the cruise line. According to the www.CRUISE.co.uk 2008-2009 cruise brochure (Page 17) lines such as Island, Ocean Village, Regent, Seaborn, Silversea, Thomson and Transocean have gratuities included (although I am sure nobody would complain if you slipped a few bob extra. P&O is about £3.75 per person per day while the American lines are about $10 per person per day Many have different tip rates for children but none seem to consider 15 as a child thereforte the adult rates apply.

Hi The rate given in the latest brochure is £4-90 per person per day which will be added to your seapass account. But you can if you wish opt out of this automatic charging by going to the customer service desk ASAP,You can then tip as you please ,the tips do amount to the biggest part of the crews pay.RCI web site will give you a more detailed break down as to who gets what but remember that most drinks have a 15% tip added to the price ?The tips are normally in USA dollars so the exchange rate may alter the £4-90?

The usual if $10 per day per person [£5.50] there is usually a reduction for minors but if you are hard up for cash you will just have to give what you can afford.

Yet again the usual stuff on tipping. First of all, if you find tipping offensive, as many do, only book cruises where tipping is not required. Always remember it is not your choice that apparently a chosen few of the supposedly poorly paid staff require tips. I beleive that it would be imposssible for any cruise line to legally force the paying of tips so if you don't want to pay, just let them know, and don't pay!

Would you go to a restaurant , have a meal and then say "I'm poor so I won't pay the tips"? ....Come on.. ... Neil.

Yes, Neil, I would, and I'm sure I'm not alone. I find tipping to be a grossly unfair way of rewarding staff, as I have said many times before. Do you really believe the small number of staff you tip on a cruise are the only low paid ones on the ship? In particular, I find the practices of prepaid tips and adding 15% to all bar and wine purchases to be very offensive and totally negate any reason to give tips. If they have any purpose at all, they should be solely to reward service better than average.

I'm sorry but I find these pathetic excuses for travelling "on the cheap" indefensible. … Neil.

I'm sorry too that you completely fail to address the issues I raise, but I will not use words such as "pathetic" because we all have a right to our own opinion.

I have to say that I TOTALLY agree with Taylor, loughborough, you should NOT have to tip, and to take it out of your onboard account I think is disgraceful!!!! I have only cruised with thomson and island where you do not have to tip if you dont want to, which I think is the right way. I am thinking of going on a fred olsen cruise later this year, but if i find that tips have to be added on I WONT BE GOING.

A friend of ours saved for ages to go on a cruise, they paid for it then saved like mad to have extra money fir trips and extra's like drinks and stuff that was not included in the cost!!!. When they got on board they then found out they had to tip all the staff!, this was worked out to what they say you should pay, this was a nigtmare for them as they then had NO money left for trips which they had been looking forward to.This spoilt there holiday. I am sorry but i think that you should only tip if you feel you have had good service, and not be made to do it!!! Vicki.
