The simple answer is no. It will not be a problem.
However, ensure that reception know and you complete the form you get on board the ship, letting them know your intention about tipping.
I would like to know what "your own way" is and hope that you will not mind answering it. Neil.
Just been on Royal Carribbean.
Pay up front with your account and then give small tips (£5 - £10 ) to the same group of recipients if you have enjoyed the service of each individual.
If you have had poor service " all round " talk to the purser and ask for up front payment to be cancelled. You then decide what to give each individual. Royal Carribean issue vouchers if you pay on your ship account so each individual is aware of your decision.
On another matter 15% tip on every duty free drink is a bit unreasonable. I doubt if Americans when drinking in their hometwn bar tip at that level?
Not sure what 'our own way' means but as it clearly states on RCI website:
Life Onboard Q: What are gratuity guidelines for cruises? A: So that you can thank those who have made your cruise vacation better than you could have imagined, we've developed these gratuity guidelines: Stateroom attendant: $3.50 USD a day per guest Dining Room Waiter: $3.50 USD a day per guest Assistant Waiter: $2.00 USD a day per guest Headwaiter: $.75 USD a day per guest Note: These gratuities apply to guests of all ages. Gratuities for other service personnel are at your discretion. A 15% gratuity will automatically be added to your bar bill or wine check when you are served. Envelopes for gratuities will be provided in your stateroom on the last night of the cruise. Gratuities may be paid in the following ways: Pre paid by having them added to your reservation by your booking agent. Added to your onboard SeaPass account. Paid in cash at the end of the cruise. To stress there is NO NEED to tip anyone else apart from these 4 individuals as everyone else receives a salary, whereas these 4 rely on tips for their salary. As stated there is 15% added to any drinks purchase, and yes, this is quite normal in the USA.
You can go to the pursers office and opt out of topping charge and give what you like to who you think gave you the best service.
As a point of interest, the 15% service charge on drinks is no longer shown separately on the check as it used to be. As a consequence I didn't hear anybody gripe about either the tip or the price of drinks when I was on Independence last week. I thought drinks prices were very reasonable due to the good exchange rate at the moment.
