BLYTH - Answered a Question by richards (27 Apr 08 12:57)

You normally have tips for your waiter/assistant; stateroom attendant; Maitre d and the Hotel Manager. The waiter/stateroom 3.75 dollars per per person per day and for the waiters assistant around 1.75 dollers per day per person the other two only get very nominal amounts around 0.75 dollars per day per person. Some cruise lines ask yo pay up in advance others when you are on the ship. We have been on around 14/15 cruises and the service has always been very good.

Its quite a lot on NCL we sailed the caribbean with them we had a lovely time, but the tips are added to the bill, you can ask to have these removed before you settle your bill, and then you can tip who you chose, that is what we did.

Most cruise ships offer the facility for adding gratuities to your onboard account. Normally 10 dollars per day per person. As a pensioner I find this an exorbitant amount and register with customer services not to pay. I then give how much I want and to whom I want.

NCL add on a per day per person tip of $10, which you can remove if you are not satisfied with the service you have received - there is no need, or indeed expectation from the crew that you will tip them extra, or individually, but we did leave tips in our cabin for our cabin stewards as they were so nice. They also add a tip to all drinks bills and to the spa treatments, so I certainly did not feel obliged to tip extra. We loved the Norwegian Jade, by the way - have a good cruise.

NCL has a policy of a fixed amount charged per person per day. This is charged to your on-board account. It was $10 per person per day when we were on Norwegian Star last year. It works quite well as with Freestyle dining you do not have a regular waiter. If you feel that someone has been especially helpful to you, then a little extra to that person would be a nice gesture. The on-board currency or Sterling would be acceptable.

Just check with your cruise line they will tell you. Some lines charge it to your onboard account but if you prefer to tip yourself just go to the pursers office and advise them you wish to do so.

On the NCL cruises you get charged $10 per day per person for all gratuities this way you dont have to worry if you have tipped enough and to who. Also they charge 15% on all drinks bought from the bars, you get a bill at the end of the cruise so again you dont have to worry about money during the cruise we took travelers cheques and used them on the last day to pay our bill, you can also charge the bill to your credit card so then the only time you need real money is when you leave the ship.

I have travelled two NCL ships - Jewel & Jade. gratuities are usually included in the price of your cruise. They consider this is the fairest way. If you object it is best to make your feelings known - it can be reversed.

On NCL the tips are added to your onboard account at a rate of $10 per person per day. So a 14 day cruise would cost $140 (about £70) per person. That saves tipping people individually. Drinks etc. from the bar automatically have 15% added to the cost.

I think you may find that NCL have a discretionary $10.50 per day per person which they add to your onboard account. This amount is shared between everyone who is involved in providing any sort of service - porters, maids, waiters in buffet restaurants, etc. 15% is added to drinks which goes to wine waiters and drinks waiters. This eliminates the need to tip but if you feel that cabin stewards or waiters have done that little bit extra you can of course reward them personally.
