Thanks morris. As you have gathered this is our first cruise I am a bit apprehensive, do they have designated places for people that smoke? and if you happen to order something will they let you know wether it is extra or do they just put it on the bill.

The tips on costa ships are compulsory and are added to your onboard account to be settled before you leave the ship either by cash or credit card. the rates in February when we went were 6 euros per day per person for cruises less than 8 days and 4.50 euros per person per day for cruises longer than 8 days. These are not able to be removed/reduced so need to be factored into the cost of the cruise! We actually gave our steward and our waitress a cash amount in an envelope at the end of the cruise for their excellent service.

Are the steward and waitress the only ones you tip? can we suggest that we do our own tipping instead.

I meant that we gave our steward and waitress an extra tip on top of what Costa added to our account, (which we felt was adequate for the service we received from the other staff).

We booked ours before we went and the tickets were waiting for us when we arrived on board. It is the best way to ensure that you get the trips you want. You may find that if there aren't enough english speaking people wanting to go on a particular trip then you will be put with another nationality ...but otherwise you will be on a coach of just english speaking people. We found them to be fairly good..obviously more pricey than if you do it yourself but you do get the knowledge of the guide who takes you....
