Neil and Ida Down - Answered a Question by Fitzgerald (22 Apr 08 11:46)

The 15% added to the drinks bill is mandatory with that line, and with most other lines. To Taylor of Loughborough…..I am afraid that you are preaching to the wrong people. If you go to a restaurant where a service charge is in operation you have an alternative either to pay or move on. You have the same option here i.e. pay or move on…but to what? If you want to change the whole tipping system, which would appear to be your attitude then talk or write to the companies which use it or vote with your feet and don’t patronise them. Failing that you will get no result from putting your grievance on this board except a great deal of aggravation. My advice…don’t penalise the workers complain directly to the cruise lines by stating your case to them and if enough people do that maybe you can change things………I’M BACK….Neil .

Taylor - Answered a Question by Fitzgerald (21 Apr 08 18:14)

Well this must be in some doubt. I am personally totally opposed to this kind of "mandatory" tipping. It is wrong in principle and wrong morally. Everone should speak out strongly against it. Just why a person who serves you with a bottle of wine deserves a tip but the person cleaning the toilets doesn't quite escapes me. I would hazard a gues that this cannot be enforced legally.

I think your wrong here Neil, As I understand a service charge can be removed & has no legal standing in law in the UK. If this is correct a cruise booked through a UK agency could possibly be in breach of this law. Maybe a Trading Standard cruiser may have the definitive?

Nice try “Wilba”. I am almost certain that NCL are registered under the Bahamian flag, anyway not British, and even though you could book your cruise with a British agent you will still be subject to the Registration rules and regulations. Nice to hear from you again….Nei.

Wilba - Answered a Question by Fitzgerald (23 Apr 08 16:48)

Neil. My answer was more to your analogy of eating in a restaurant here in the UK, as that was the inference you made to Taylor. I only suggested NCL maybe in breach as they sell through their UK office via UK Agents. The ships registration has no bearing a company's origin. Bahamian 'Flag of Convenience' for a Malaysian owned shipping line.
