I disagree with OV policy to stop people smoking in their cabins. I detest the smell of alcohol will they 'ban' this in public places - no I think not. Having read many reviews you seem to be the only one who says they can smell it as "it came though into your cabin" - I dont think so. So I am afraid I disagee with your comments on this matter.

I appreciate that you have your on views on this subject but I can assure you that not only the smell but the actual smoke did come into our cabin fron the one next to us. The other thing that is worth thinking about is that it is not just the occupants of the cabin who are immersed in smoke but also the two cabin staff who serviced it and they couldn't complain to the management but I can assure you that they did speak to me about it and to subject anyone to that abuse is outlawed in the UK and is gradually being outlawed throughout the cruise networks. I still feel that in ten years time people will have accepted smoking as bad and wonder how we ever put up with it. .... Neil.

As you say everyone is entitled to their opinion - you have yours and I have mine. The cabin crew smoke as well you know!!!! People do accept that smoking is bad for you I am sure. Very strong views you have on the subject which you are entitled to just as I am. I do think your views are a bit exaggerated though! I mean immersed in smoke a bit strong I think. It never bothers me anyway as I only smoke on my balcony as we are allowed to do. Marie.

Hello Neil & Ida, I agree with your views completely. On our last cruise where smoking was banned in cabins, I could smell cigarette smoke every time we walked through the corridor. I have medical problems where fumes of any kind are dangerous to my health and I imagine , I am not the only person suffering contamination because of some selfish individuals. Smoking on balconies can also cause problems for non-smoking people.

I have been cruising since 1980 along with my husband, sister and her husband. We are in our mid 70's now, non smokers, and can honestly say we have never entered a cabin and smelt stale smoke. Nor have we smelt smoke from adjoining cabins during our cruises. Neil & Ida Down??? sound like mischief makers and I suggest Speight you take no notice of them and have a lovely cruise. Winifred.

Hope you've read my reply to Speight's question as I have replied to it with a truthful answer and I wouldn't like you to doubt it and call me a 'mischief maker'. I wouldn't want to put Speight off but you can only write about your own experience.

Neal - Answered a Question by Speight (10 Feb 09 00:00)

My lady is an anti-smoking bloodhound, & she's never detected any traces in a (non- balcony) cabin on a number of cruises with OV. Neil's update is useful, but he fails to clarify that his comments don't refer to OV, he's never sailed with them. Chris.

Hi Chris, In a way you are incorrect. True I have never sailed with Ocean Village but I have been on Ocean Village when she was Star Princess but the remark I made was about smoke intruding into the cabin concerned Constellation but can apply to many ships, particularly those with connecting doors. Hope you are enjoying your cruise an look forward to your return. .......Neil.

Middle East! Get Your Act Together!

By Freddie Moser

With all of the conflict happening in various parts of the Middle East, I can’t help thinking that they are missing out on a huge financial boost from tourism.Look at the success of places like Dubai, a haven in the middle of some of the most dangerous countries in the world right now. A place I have travelled to twice, both on a cruise, and as a holiday destination. It oozes quality, and has amazing weather to boot. But to the immediate North of Dubai, sits Iran, which shares its border...

Silversea was not meant to be!

By Barbara Hopley

Barbara Hopley's blog

On Monday 22 May I was booked to go on a ship visit of the ‘Silver Whisper’ by Silversea Cruises. We get invited to see ships all the time but do them on our days off as too busy to take time out of a working week. That’s how dedicated I am to see as many ships as possible as so much easier to sell when you have seen them.I had been looking forward to seeing this ship as have never seen a Silversea ship, it had been booked for a few weeks and I made my arrangements at home ...
