Loved the Emerald in its heyday, but it was tatty five years ago, and too expensive for what it offers for its farewell season - now a Destiny convert - hope it re-locates to the Aegean as the Calypso is not quite right. Wilde, Norfolk 1st May 2008 .

Apparently The Emerald has only a year or so of cruising to go as some changes in regulations mean that from 2010 it cannot cruise unless it has a BIG refit. The owners of the ship might not want to pay for this so it will be bye bye The Emerald. Thomson will be short of a ship but with the current economic situation this might just mean moving either the Destiny or Spirit from the western Med to Greece.

As far as I am aware, the Emerald has not had a major refit for some years. During the period between the Thomson cruises, Lois cruises lines re paints the funnel and uses the ship for their own cruise schedule before returning her to Thomson the following year. It was my understanding from some friends within TUI that The Emerald was on her last year, but annoucements were not being made as they knew they would be flooded with bookings on this ship and not on their other ships, which although popular do not attract the same percentage of repeat passengers. One of the reasons for introducing the little calypso was to provide an alternative to the ship once she leaves the TUI fleet. The one point that Thomson have not looked at is whether lois will refit the ship themselves, as TUI would lose passengers to the expanding lois cruises. They are expanding their own cruise itineries. So at the end of the day watch this space. In terms of re-fit perhaps the bar stool in the starlight bar will stop squeeking. I am prepared and booked for the last 2 weeks of the season, in case it is the farewell cruise. And.
