We will be in St Petersburgh in September and, following a previous recommendation by Mr Aldrich, we have booked a two day tour with Alla. They have been very efficient, very friendly and they email lots of information.

I will be sure to report back in a few weeks as to how the tour went!

No, you do not need a visa in Russia if you use a Russian registered tour guide, Suggest you research Alla, Den Rus or Red October or Anastasia. They are all highly recommended. Personally I am booked with Alla.

I am not convinced of the perceived wisdom of booking your own tours in St Petersburg as they can end up as very tiring 9 hour marathons for two days running. Fine if that is what you want but by being discriminating there are alternatives. For example our cruise company - Celebrity arranged a private tour to the Hermitage in the evening, followed by a ballet in the Winter Palace theatre. This meant that 90 people had the Hermitage to themselves and the whole evening was one of the most spectacular I have ever been privaleged to enjoy. Those who visited the Hermitage with Red October and Alla said the Hermitage was so crowded that they really did not enjoy it at all So the continual knocking of ships tours is not necessarily totally true!! Other excellent tours were the canal boat trip and visit to the St Peter & Paul Fortress and the Panormaic tour of St Petersburg which had photo stops at all the main sights. Yes there was a lot we didn't see but what we did we really enjoyed and by pacing ourselves were not exhausted at the end of it.

By Abbi Varela

….and what a fantastic day it was too, such a sense of achievement. As you probably guessed I took part last weekend in the We Love Manchester 10k run, along with my sister and friend. It was a really great day and the atmosphere was the best it has ever been.I can’t say the run was easy, in fact far from it! I was praying for cloud or even rain on the morning, running in the sun is so much harder. As we set off at 930 it was almost as if someone switched on the sun!! …it wa...

Queen Mary 2 or Queen Victoria?I have worked on both and have been lucky enough, in my role on both these ships, to have the freedom to use the public areas.
