Q: I am taking my daughter on a transatlantic trip from Southampton in November. After reaching New York we will have a full day in New York, however it has just crossed my mind as to what happens to your luggage during this day. we will fly home that evening?. Has anyone done this trip. I am also interested as what is the best thing to do to see all the highlights before we return to the airport. Many thanks. 7 answers

we got a cab from cruise terminal got him to take us to schwartz travel we got the address on internet he waited for us while we took our cases in then we got him to take us to maceys wehad a good look round. Depending how long you have before your flight you could go on the open top bus sightseeing i think the loop takes 2 hours to get back where you started. We then hailed a taxi got him to take us to schwartz for our luggage and wait for us and then take us to airport .Allow plenty of time to get to airport at busy times.we enjoyed new york would be a shame to miss it.

Unfortunately it is not a full day by the time you disembark, clear imigration and they have to arrive at the airport a few hours early. Why not ask Cunard if you can add a few nights hotel stay?

There is a very good left luggage service in Midtown Manhattan that will store your suitcases for you by the day. http://www.schwartztravel.com/ They\'re well reviewed and not the least fanatical. Once you are in town take one of the HOHO bus rides for a loop of whichever tourist sights you want to see. Try Grey Line, they have several, or Google for others... http://www.newyorksightseeing.com/

After 9/11 the Americans are fanatical about anti terrorism, and they removed all the left luggage lockers everywhere. If you go on an organised tour from the ship then they will look after your luggage whilst on the tour, but generally these are only a few hours long. Sometimes the cruise line will arrange a "day room" at a hotel, most times it is free, but not guaranteed, and the bean counters on all cruise lines are cutting back as much as they can. I would ask Cunard if they offer this option. I have often found that the morning of disembarkation is a nightmare with very little help from the cruise ship, they have your money you paid your tips you have filled in the questionnaire and you are on your own.

Peter, yes I get the impression over the years that the bean counters are about but still we still enjoy ourselves even if it is the annual moan that \"things are not what they were\" if not we would have nothing to talk about. Disembarkation is always sad and I just relax until we are called, usually the last off if you are on a hotel coach, but easier to find luggage when the \"masses\" have gone. The staff are human as they have worked hard on our behalf and probably glad to get off the boat for a few hours away from waiting on us hand and foot. Within 12 hours they will be off again with a new lot to look after. Many are scheduled to go home to far off places with a long overdue return to their families and their holiday. Yes I have tipped them and deservedly so and look forward to my next trip on Cunard. Things have never been the same since they let us \"steerage people\" free run of the ship. How standards have fallen??!!
