Q: We are sailing on Eclispe on 28th September this year, I am thinking about taking out pre-pay extra for phone calls, texts and internet with my phone provider. If I use my phone on board ship will I pay the european rates or US, when in europe on land I presume the appropriate rate for thta country will apply.

To add to the excellent advice you've been given ............... bear in mind that if you phone someone else on the ship, you'll be paying over-the-top for both making the call on ship's system & for it being received on ship's system. Keep it switched off while aboard, or unwanted texts (Bristol City results, car insurance reminders, etc etc) will cost you dear. Ships' internets tend to be very slow, which multiplies the cost, so get on the internet when you have a shore signal, or cheaper still, use cheap internet cafes ashore. ................ when ashore, at each port you will get a (free) text welcoming you to your phone company's partner, this will tell you the prices. ................. finally, if you've not used the phone abroad, make sure it is not locked out of being used abroad (security feature). Your airtime supplier will unlock free-of-charge but it needs to be done before you go. .......... Chris

If you use your mobile phone whilst you are at sea, you will not pay European or American rates, you will pay EXORBITANT rates!!! We are also on the Eclipse on 28th September; do you by any chance play bridge?

If you use your phone onboard you will pay the cruise lines rate which varies from very expensive to astronomical. Not only due you pay for outgoing calls but incoming as well, so tell friends and family not to call unless necessary. Don't even think about the internet on your phone, just turn off the Roaming or you could be in for a big shock when you get home. Use your phone when you are in port and off the ship...........Wilba

Good advice from PG of A and Wilba. Can I add that you need to be very careful even in Europe. I got a special data package from T-Mob for Europe a few weeks ago so was shocked to get a bill for over £100 when I returned home. The reason was that we were not only visiting Euro countries like Italy and Greece but also Croatia which is outside Europe (for the purposes of phones). I didn't realise that would bump my phone bill up so drastically. All I did was check my emails ashore in Croatia a few times and look up a newspaper website once in a while. Definitely turn off your data roaming and automatic downloads of emails while abroad as well. Your phone operator can explain how if you ring them...Liz
