Q: I am cruising the eastern med in August of this year. My bank account ( Barclays) comes with free travel insurance which is provided by Norwich Union.

Do you think this is sufficent cover or should I purchase further insurance from a cruise specialist company.

There's a lot of good advice here and you should follow the advice of Spartan and Wilba especially. Read the cover, including the boring bits and if you are not sure of anything ring up and ask. I have a Bank's insurance and they recently paid out over £5,000 on one claim but i had checked everything before I went. So they work if you do your homework. ......Neil

We also have a ‘Free’ insurance but with Lloyds TSB and prior a recent 3 week Far East cruise & stay, I phoned them to inform them of the trip & asked what extra cover we would need. It covered everything I asked, cruise ship cover, full medical care, repatriation (up to 3 million I recall), explained our medical conditions, blood pressure. Type 2 diabetes & was amazed at ‘no additional charge’. This is better cover than most of the ‘chargeable’ companies are offering. Check it out……Wilba

The only thing is to remember to book with the Debit/Credit card on that account. If not you are not covered as my friend has found out.

Can this just be the deposit by debit card, or does the whole account have to be paid this way

I too have the same cover with Lloyds TSB and they even covered us for the extra time we had to spend in Sydney in March which was over the stated time of 31 days with no extra charge and they sent me a cheque for a Fiver to cover the cost of the phone call I made. Just about to check and see if they will cover 'Swine Flu'.......Wendy

the sensible answer, is ring the underwriters, cruise are considered higher risk and may not be covered on standard holiday insurance.....if not automatically covered them may with a small premium rather than taking a totally seperate insurance

Read the policy I have Barclays and company cover. Let’s face it all have excess and all try to get out of paying. The big company’s like Barclays just don’t need bad publicity if you have a claim and they don’t pay out. Remember all insurance company’s pay you billions of pounds providing your claim is for the 30th February.
