It is always better, cheaper and more rewarding IMHO to do your own shore excursions arranged with a private guide rather than having 40 people following the 'lollypop'. Suggest you go to the ports of call section on boards dot cruisecritic dot com for loads of ideas.

I went on this ship last year on the Fire and Ice cruise which 3 places in Iceland and 2 in Norway. Although some people said the excursions were expensive and i do think you could probably do them cheaper yourself if you've not been cruising before it may give you peace of mind. If you do decide to do any of them make sure you book asap. We wanted to do the whale watching trip and it was already fully booked by the following morning that we left. Fortunately they did lay on extra as it was so oversubscribed and we did eventually get to go. There was no way we could have done this trip independently as it was a good hours drive on the coach. Do do some research before you go and make you decision accordingly. This year we are going on another cruise and have decided not to do any of their excursions and will pretty much do our own thing after much research on internet. Hope this answers your question and have a lovely trip.

Although my first great love is Cruising………..my second is football, my beloved Cardiff City to be precise! I’m thinking maybe I should have put my wife and children in here somewhere but they will understand! As a season ticket holder i’ve been a little distracted over the last few weeks as we have been fighting for the second automatic promotion spot to the Premier League! It’s been a close fought battle with Fulham and it went down to the very last game...

How Fred Olsen compares

By Charlene Thackeray

Charlene Thackeray's blog

We are recently back from our first Fred Olsen cruise.Whilst this is the smallest ship we have been on as a family there were lots of great things and a few not so great things for us. We knew there would not be much for Charlie on board however he had a great time with all his new friends from the Entertainments team. I can honestly say the entertainment team were really friendly and put on some great shows. I loved how the stage rose in the Neptune lounge making it a great area for lots of ...
