We have just returned from our 3rd cruise on the Emerald. There is only one real formal night when you meet the Captain, usually the 2nd night on board. Most people like to wear formal this night but it is not essential . Lots of men wear an ordinary suit. Other nights it is smart casual, of course no shorts or tee shirts in the evening unless you want to eat in the bistro where I think it will be allowed. I am sure that you will have a great time as the entertainment, staff and food are excellent.

Hi Ellis In a seven night cruise there is usualy 2 dressy nights for DJ or tux, 2 Jacket and tie nights and the rest casual, last time I cruised on Emerald about 80% dressed in DJ on the dressy nights. Enjoy it.

I was on the Emerald a few years ago. There were 4 formal nights in a 14 night cruise. Quite a few did not wear formal wear but nobody took any notice. On other ships formal wear was almost 100%. On the other nights it would be jacket and tie or open neck shirt and no jacket. But there really is no strict rule on the Emerald regards this. Dress code is notified on the ships daily newspaper which is delivered to your cabin a day in advance. Go and have a good time, the worst thing you could do is worry about it. Regards Dennis .

Hi We sailed on the Emerald last May & had a great time. There were two formal nights on the 7 night cruise ~ I wore 50's style cocktail dress hubby wore suit & tie. Some people dressed up far more than others, I think it comes down to what you feel comfortable in. If you don't wish to dress formally there is always the buffet. Shelle.

We cruised on the Emerald in June 2007. There was one "meet the captain" dinner each week. Some couples were in dinner suits and evening dresses but the majority wore suits or shirts with ties and skirts and tops or dresses. Don't worry about it just have a good time.

Royal Princess

By Emily Watts

Last week I was lucky enough to experience Royal Princess which was also my first time on a Princess ship. It was everything I expected and more. as soon as we got on board I was impressed with the decor and the grandness, it really is a beautiful ship. Our cabin was located on Baja deck B215 which had a balcony and for two sharing it is very spacious. Princess prides themselves on the beds and it was probably one of the most comfortable ones I have ever slept on. After embarkation, we...

How Fred Olsen compares

By Charlene Thackeray

Charlene Thackeray's blog

We are recently back from our first Fred Olsen cruise.Whilst this is the smallest ship we have been on as a family there were lots of great things and a few not so great things for us. We knew there would not be much for Charlie on board however he had a great time with all his new friends from the Entertainments team. I can honestly say the entertainment team were really friendly and put on some great shows. I loved how the stage rose in the Neptune lounge making it a great area for lots of ...

Two nights on Indy..

By Alison Ranaldi

Alison Ranaldi's blog

Last week I spent two nights on the newly revamped Independence of the Seas.We sailed from Southampton in glorious sunshine to Le Havre and back. This was my third time on board this ever-popular ship and I was keen to see the changes to her after a big refit. We had a balcony cabin on deck 9 which had everything we needed for a comfortable break. I’m not generally a fan of mini-cruises. They offer an excellent way for someone like myself to see the ships but I do not think they are a g...
