Sorry to dissapoint, but its unlikely she would have got a refit.
They may have re newed some carpet etc.
However, the Emerald is a "Marmite" cruise ship. You will either love her or hate her.
Having been built over 50 years ago, she has the classic lines of an old steamer, so she has an olive shaped hull that cuts through the water even in rough weather. the newer ships have box hulls which although great in still and calm water, produce an unusual rocking motion.
The interior is rather like an old persons house, the decorations are old, perhaps a little worn in places but lovingly cherished and maintained.
The hull is an original riveted hull rather than the steam sealed, so she flexes gracefully with the sea.
I have travelled on this ship over 13 times, from the carribean, the black sea, north africa, eastern and western med and she has never let me down. I have only had one complaint in all those cruises and that was about a thomson staff member rather than the ship.
The best advice is to read the reviews and see how you feel, you will see the ones who love her and the ones who dont'. Its the only way to form an opinion of your own.
Can't comment on the refit, but she is quite a comfortable ship and these smaller ships that are getting on a bit were built to last, unlike some of the modern ships which look more like container vessels painted white. You know what they say, "the older the fiddle the sweeter the tune.
A crowd of us did the transatlantic crossing about four years ago we thought then that the ship needed a refit but it was comfortable and food was good. The staff were very helpful. It is what you make of a cruise yourself that count.
We have just completed the Ancient Wonders cruise on the Emerald. It was her last cruise before her refit....one, I may add, that is desperately needed. Like many of our fellow travellers, we were very disappointed with the state of this ship when we first boarded her. She smelled awful and looked pretty grimey. However, she is a nice size and shape and will no doubt be lovely by the time she sails again in May. I think you will thoroughly enjoy your holiday then.
We went on Emerald to the Adriatic last May, she seemed to be little changed from previous cruses in 2000 and 2002. The cabins are sparse inside but you normally go on Emerald because of the interesting itinery and will only go to the cabin to wash and sleep. Public rooms are OK as is the food and service in the restaurant.
We went on the Emerald a few years ago and the food etc. was excellent. She must be showing her age now when you see how "modern" the current fleet of ships are.
Believe me, We went on the Emerald in September and it was fantastic, yes the cabins were looking a bit tired but very clean. The entertainment was absolutely great and the food was out of this world, the staff were very very helpful, what more could you ask for. Go for it you will not be disappointed Regards Brian and Kathy Meads.
We cruised on the Emerald in September 2006 and found her to be very comfortable, clean, excellent food, shows, staff.....in fact couldn't fault the holiday at all....we did two weeks aegean and adriatic.
She is aged !0r was 7 years ago when i thoght she was a bit of a tug boat.but she is cheap & like many things you get what you pay fo.
Asfar as wqe know no sign of a refit.we did ionion and agean cruise venice area then greek ilse, she is an old girl towards some ships but still in good order ,we have just come back from canaries on the destany.and though this was a good ship the cabins are smaller. both me and my wife prefered the emerald much more . hope this help.
