I am told that P & O don't allow you to take alcohol to your cabin. They keep it for you until you get back.

This is not correct. You are certainly allowed to take alcohol on board. P&O just reserve the right to confiscate alcohol if the person concerned is obviously inebriated. We took some Champagne and some Pimms in our hand luggage. Friends have taken a wine box to put in the fridge. No problem. The other restrictions about liquids do not apply to cruises leaving from Southampton, only when you are flying.
