I wouldnt get off the ship its just not worth it. Have a leisurely day all chilling out book for the spa or just sunbathe or sit and read at the end of deck 10 it doesnt get so busy. We have just come back and this was our second visit to tunis and we stayed aboard both time.
The advice given by Taylor of Dartford comes from a person who goes on holiday to ... "Hotel Costa del...." and never leaves the hotel to explore what is around him. So don't join the "miserable set", they are the ones who always wish they had done something! Tunis is worth a visit. You could either go on an organised trip or do you own thing at a fraction of the cost. Taxis - from memory - I think they have seat belts. Drivers are safe and friendly, they will wait for you whilst you have a look around. Don't think that all five of you will fit in the taxis though, can't remember seeing any "mini- bus" type. The Medina is great fun but busy and you could pick up a few bargains if you fancy a shopping spree. Sidi Bou Said is very picturesque, there is also a small market there and various souvenir shops. There is an admission charge into Carthage and this is a very interesting place to visit, very educational. There are also 2 beaches close by, Gammarth and La Marsa. It is a great opportunity to explore a new country even if it is only for a few hours, and just remember you had the previous day to chill, sunbathe and check out the spa on your day at sea. Dont lose a day of your holiday have fun and explore!
With respect to Powis I do apologise if I am wrong about tunis took notice of other cruisers who said it was awful. As a matter of interest I have done p&o and royal carib cruisers and participated in most trips so I am not really a "hotel costa de sol" type person more caribbean really, tried a more casual cruise this year but wont again...... I agree with taylor, i thought tunis was a gloryfied toilet to be hones.
You have a choice you could either get off the ship and make up your own mind about Tunis, or take the advice of taylor and the opinion of arkley, who obviously are NOT well travelled ,and have the view of the port of La Goulette which is not very attractive.
