You can take the train from Civitavecchia to Rome. They run about every half hour and costs 9 euro return, which also includes unlimited travel on Rome local buses. See http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html Suggest you get off at San Pietro (St Peters) and take the 64 bus from outside the station (every 5mins) and St Peters is two stops, or you can walk in 10-15 mins. From St Peters you can take the tourist bus around Rome which costs around 15euro.

Hi. We caught the train from the port straight into Rome. It took about 45 minutes. Then you can walk around or do as we did & catch a tourist hop-on hop-off bus for 16 euros. Ja.

I did the Rome Alone trip too. there is a huge car/coach park at the back of St peters where they drop you off. Just walk around the front of the vatican and you can see the main square. The hop on hop off bus leaves from just beside the Vatican its 16euros. if you are due to be there on a Sunday around the time of a mass, then you may have problems with the bus. they are suppossed to be every 15-20 minutes but we waited an hour and a half to join it because they were missing out the vatican stop because of the numbers of pedestrians milling about at the end of the service. Also you have to buy your ticketes from the tobacconist kiosk just opposite the bus stop. There are 2 different companies, same price appear to be the same route. hope you have a fantastic tim.
