My wife and I have cruised well over 40 times over the years and have only once had an upgrade, but I have to say it was not for the lack of asking. We were only given the upgrade after our travel agent pulled a few strings after all the hassle we had experienced days prior to embarkation. I would add that most our cruises have started in America where all the upgrades appear to to be given to American passengers as a first resort, or maybe I am being biased!!!!!! Ehhhh! I think not.
You upgrade your cabin with hard cash, not for free ! The Upgrade Fairy is not a frequent visitor. If your cruise is sold out, if you are in a cabin that sleeps 4 and there are only 2 of you, then they may upgrade you, but in short, don't hold your breath! I assume you are now Elite members of the Captains Club - if so then you would certainly be viewed in a favourable light.
Yes we are, and thanks for the help.
We have cruised with Cunard 3 times and got an upgrade the 3rd time.
We are sailing with Princess lines to the Caribean over Christmas .Do you think we will be disappointed after the Cunard line.?
No I do not think you will be disappointed, we think the 'American' lines are far superior to the 'British' ones. We have been on, amongst others 5 Princess ships one P & O (never again) and Cunard's QM2 which was ok but no where near as good as Celebrity and Princess.
I have to agree that celebrity is the best in many ways.
Someone asked a similar question 10 down from yours & in the 60 cruises I've done my last 2 'short' cruises were the closest I've come to an upgrade. We booked 3 'Guaranteed' insides on Navigator & we were given 3 promenade view on one cruise & 3 outsides on the second cruise. Maybe that's the 'Trick'. On a more serious note the only people I ever hear of getting upgrades are regular high end cabin purchasers who get upgraded to even higher grades, ie. those who have the most, get the most. Ah well!
We sail with Cunard and seem to be lucky with upgrades. Usually four of us go cruising, but we have found if there are only two, you are more likely to get an upgrade.
I think if you stick with one company then there is probably a loyalty bonus in the form of an upgrade. We like Cunard and only travel with them so perhaps this is the reason for us being lucky with the upgrades that we have had. I do suggest that you ask if there is a possibilty of having an upgrade though.
We have cruised with cunard since 1994 we are diamond club members and have never had a cabin upgrade. we have however seen a dolly bird on her own get a 2 cabin upgrade?
We have like you taken 30+ cruises.Usually to keep the cost down we always book very close to the departure day, that way we usually get in on the last min offers and get an upgraded room for the price of an inside. Only time we received free upgrade when we arrived on board was 11yrs ago at Houston when we were for some reason mistaken for NCL executives from England. We booked a small inside and were moved to large picture window cabin. Didn't do us any good though we spent most of the holiday in a hurrican, last thing we wanted to look at was the sea outside the window.
