You are not being alarmist. The dangers in the Indian Ocean and surrounding area are well documented. It is a dangerous part of the world. If an oil tanker can be held to ransome, so can a cruise ship. Having said that people are mugged and murdered in the Caribbean and also on our own streets. I think we all have to decide for ourselves the risks we are willing to take.

Whilst I appreciate that there is a major concern here I think that you should also be aware that there are far more measures for our security happening unseen on cruise ships now. No one wants to sail with the feeling of fear because that would detract from the pleasure but severe measures are there on ships but they are mainly unnoticed by guests. I think there have been two, certainly one major attempt, made by pirates to board a cruise ship and these thwarted by devices, which I will not go into, on board and speed. This is an on-going area and composite practices are being used and bettered the whole time, it is just not brought to the public's notice. .....Neil.

How on earth do you know about that? Always suspected you had something to do with the cruise companies. But, It is reassuring to know that behind the scenes safeguards are in place.

Agree with you Brown. No-one in the cruise industry or anyone with any Knowledge, however it has come to their attention, should give any clues to the nature of protection cruise ships have. We are not safe anywhere these days, so more power to the cruise lines. Let us all continue to cruise as safely as we can. Knowledge to the terrorists and pirates is their lifeblood.

I am a passenger who reads a lot and has some inside information but I am not connected with the industry, sorry to disillusion. .....Neil.

Spot on Neil. The counter measures are often there for all to see but I guess folk either have other things on their mind or are not so inquisitive. I always feel particularly safe on QM2. Richard.

According to Australian newpapers, the Oceana Nautica was attacked yesterday in the Gulf of Aden but managed to out run the pirates. The Nautica is equipped with the Long Range Acoustic Device but did not have to deploy it. It has been reported that this device can shatter eardrums if you happen to be in the range of the beam's scope.

I take on board everything that has been said and hopefully you are all correct but it is not the Pirates (who hopefully are only after ransom money) that are my main concern but the fanatics who only wish to maim and kill, and more often than not people from the West. Would it not be better if the Cruise Lines did like the Airlines after 9/11 and that was to advertise that armed sky marshals would be deployed on random flights? Surely this would act as a greater deterrent if the perpetrator believed that there was Professionals on board who could respond to any threat. Thank you for your comments.

I know that I am far more apprehensive when I know someone on a plane is armed I would sooner not know and trust in the knowledge that I am protected, the same applies at sea. I'll leave you with this thought; there are billions of $s invested out there on the sea, do you not suppose that someone has that in mind all the time? .... Neil.
