Similar to Madeira this is also a portugese group of islands. Ponta delgada (capital of Sao Miguel island) itself is quite small with an incredible market which will take you back in time but is a must see for the amazing fish that are found in these deep Atlantic waters. The island is very green and mountainous with some lovely scenery such as the 'green and blue lakes' which are in extinct volcanos. There are also Thermal springs, hot pools and boiling mud to be found in the east of the island. Pineapples, cheese, butter and milk, are a major export. They also produce tea and tobacco. A very interesting island!

They also celebrate Christmas and there are some lovely shops in the town. So if your on a Christmas/New Year cruise it is superb for last minute shopping, you know, that little gift you forgot to pack.
