Best time to see the Northern Lights is November to March, I believe. Probably the only ships venturing so far north are the Hutigrute fleet - Norweigian Coastal Voyages. To the second question, VERY cold. My husband was in Svalbard in April and temperatures were still dipping to 18 below freezing.
