Can anyone advise which shore excursions are worth considering during a cruise to the Canary Islands in Dec 2008 regarding cost, content, duration and degree of mobility required ? James, Essex.

I did all the Temples & Monuments I ever wanted, years ago, so these days I prefer the less strenuous. In recent years the Pyramids from Alexandria was exciting, but that’s a long story so I’ll go for Nelsons Dockyard, Shirley Heights & any one of the 365 beaches to die for in Antigua. That’s one good day out.

Difficult one! Grenada River Tubing was one of my favourites. Adults need the opportunity to have fun just like kids and this was fun! Floating down a little river, not knowing what was round the corner. St Lucia Land and Sea Tour was another. You got to see so much of St.Lucia and to be able to say you've been through the world's only drive through volcano is a once in a lifetime experience. Turtle and Shipwreck tour in Barbados. NEVER did I really think I would swim amongst wild turtles. They are awesome marine creatures. I took some brilliant photographs of them too.

Machu Pichu from Lima and Iguazu Falls from Montevideo were absolutely fantastic.

Must have been about 10 years ago since I climbed the Dunns River Falls, but I'll never forget it and would too, definitely recommend this trip! The sheer sight of the waterfalls and lush vegetation simply took your breath away - just as the brochure said!!

Stingray City in Grand Cayman. What a trip, my heart was in my mouth as i got into the water but as the stingray`s swam up and gently brushed against me, I was in my element. We got to feed them and me and my fellow took photos of each other swimming with these amazing creatures. The experience truly made my holiday !!!!!

I loathe shore excursions but one has to do them. The fractured accented English of the guides irritates me, worse when pseudo-American is added. I've just done a P&O Caribbean cruise where all tours were pricey despite the favourable exchange rate. I remember one guy in Monaco who couldn't get 'left' and 'right' correct so we were never sure where to look. The Nile Cruise was best with so much of interest, spoiled by being almost forced to attend briefings for the next day. Have just received the tour schedule for a Black Sea cruise in October (Russia permitting) with the same 'attend the briefing' advice which means that one never has a free moment. Two weeks Western Med was the most tiring; off the ship nearly every day being carted about famous places by uninteresting guides. All my best tours were where I was able to go on my own without being shown another Italian church or Carib rip-off beach. This is just another revenue stream for the liners on top of art auctions, bazaars, etc.
