You dont need to be cheeky. Ships provide Pool towels when you are on deck by their pool and beach towels for when you go ashore. You usually have to give your room number and sign for them. I never take towels with me when I go on a cruis.

Some cruise lines leave your clean beach towels on the bed at night, when you get back to your cabin after dinner, for use the following day ashore. Just leave the used towels on the floor of the bathroom the following morning as per any used towel, to be collected.
