Depending on the cruise Line you can choose to have your Gratuities included in the price at the time of booking. Alternatively they can be added to your on-board account whilst on-board or you can choose to pay them to the crew members yourself.

The confusion about cruise tipping is understandable. There are headwaiters, waiters, assistant waiters, cabin stewards and others who may expect gratuities -- or not. Some cruise lines, especially luxury ones, discourage tips. This is something you need to ask your agent when your booking your cruise. The cruiselines that include tips that I'm aware of are Ocean Village, Island, Silversea, Seabourn & Regent. But please bear in mind that tips are not compulsory so even if they're not included you don't have to pay them, or you can just pay the people direct that you think have served you well - like your cabin steward.

NCL include tips as an added amount daily & shown on your on-board acoount. This means that the tips at the end of the cruise bear no relation to your overall decision on how much you want to pay. Far better to give to those you think deserve it, at the cruise end. They will be in envelopes, so no one, incl. the recipient knows how much are in them. Celebrity allow you to put your tips onto your onboard credit, but only if you are tipping all that they suggest, which includes such people as the mostly invisible Maitre Ds. All brochures show at the back the suggested amounts, just adjust that to which you feel comfortable in giving.

To the best of my knowledge and I've just come off the Norwegian Dream - NCL is currently the only cruise line that makes gratuities mandatory. That is, they tell you how much will be deducted each day per person and you cannot opt out. You can, of course, vote with your feet and use equally good alternative cruise lines.

With P&O the tips etc are suggested and you leave them for the steward on the last morning, give them to the waiters/wine waiters etc the night before, etc. It's up to you and I prefer that to the system where they take it out of your bill etc. We have had cruises where we wanted to tip our waiters more than the room steward so it is in your hands. I have found that the Cunard line add tips onto your bill (I think it;s about 10%, not too sure) but P & O leave it to you discretion but recommend that yout tip approx £1.40 per person per day for your steward and about £1.20 per person for table service. You don;t have to but they are always so helpful that you do tip well. sylvia Seeley (regular cruiser - P & 0.

Royal Princess

By Emily Watts

Last week I was lucky enough to experience Royal Princess which was also my first time on a Princess ship. It was everything I expected and more. as soon as we got on board I was impressed with the decor and the grandness, it really is a beautiful ship. Our cabin was located on Baja deck B215 which had a balcony and for two sharing it is very spacious. Princess prides themselves on the beds and it was probably one of the most comfortable ones I have ever slept on. After embarkation, we...

Last week I sailed on the newly rejuvenated Independence of the Seas. As I’ve mentioned before she’s always been one of my favourite ships, but it’s been a few years since I was last onboard so I was keen to see the changesI was onboard for 2 mini cruises back to back so I’ll be splitting my review over a couple of blogsDay 1Arrived at the port at 12:00 and as a platinum member, I had priority check-in, so thankfully I skipped the huge queue and was onboard within 30 m...

Sailing like a Celebrity Part ...

By Molly McIntyre

Molly McIntyre's blog

As I was only on board for two nights we did not bother with any speciality dining on this occasion so we ate in the main dining room which was amazing. We had opted for Celebrity Select Dining which means we could choose when we wanted to go for dinner and could just turn up or you can pre-book a time on your planner. We pre-booked 6.45pm on both nights. On arrival at the dining room entrance we were escorted to a table towards the back of the restaurant and were immediately greeted by two l...
