If you intend to go on any organised trip you may as well book beforehand. The action ashore desk is only open at certain times and there can be a problem with queues. We have been on the organised trip to Rome twice and it is great. We found the trip with lunch a better option everything is organised for you and is good value for money. Hope you enjoy Rome, have fun.

Hi just back from 2 weeks on OV2 we did the organised trip to Rome and there were plenty of spaces available. You dont have to queue you can collect the trip form from the Action Ashore desk anytime all you have to do is fill in the form and post it in the box next to the desk and your tickets are delivered to your door. I would advise that you do it as soon as you are onboard as it is a very popular trip. I dont agree that the lunch is good its edible but not great and the red wine they provide would be better used on chips! It also takes about 1and 1/2 hours out of your day as the restaurant seems to deal with other cruise ships so they are serving an awful lot of people. There is an option to do the same trip without lunch which means you have that time to look around Rome on your own. It all depends on how hungry you are after breakfast we were still feeling quite full so maybe didnt appreciate the food as much as others. Whatever you chose you will have a great visit but dont expect to have lots of time to look at anything because you dont and make sure you keep your eye on your tour guides because they lost people on our trip 4 of whom had to return to the ship by taxi. Dont let this put you off and have a great cruise. We did.

It depends on how resourceful you are. Remember that the port, Civitavecchia, is quite a ways from Rome. However, the train station is a short walk from the port and there are regular trains to the center of Rome for about 6 quid. We have done it twice on cruises. WSe just catch the hop on/hop off tourist bus that runs a circular route around the main sights of Rome. You can hop off, view the sights, and hop back on a succeeding bus, (they stop every 30 minutes), to the next attraction. The price includes a nice lunch at the Hard RFock Cafe. We saved a bundle and had a great day.

Get the train and use the Metro in Rome to get around. All of the best tourist attractions are inside a 1 mile radius with the Pantheon, Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain and Piaza Navona very close together. I'm in my 60's and found it easy. The Colosseum is next to the Forum. Go there last and then get the Metro from the Forum up to the station and your train back to the boat. The coach takes ages to get into Rome because of the traffic.

Dont bother going on an excursion just get the train from civitavecchia and the last stop is Roma Termini this costs 9 euros and takes one hour if you want to get off at St Peters the stop is approx 3 before Roma and called St Pietr we did this trip on our own in AUGUST WITH TWO TEENAGERS IN TOW very easy to do get a good map as you live in dartford you must be ok with the London Tube system, the Rome system is just the same get a map from the tube station, we are use to the London Tubes and getting about Rome is just like getting around London. Go for it when in Rome as the saying goes. sue m Hornchurch.

MSC offers a new school along ...

By Adrian Partridge

MSC Cruises, they just get better and better in my opinion. Last month I wrote about getting on a ship and helping the Caribbean by going there and spending some money. MSC have done a lot more than that with their latest offer of a school for the children.Along with the government of the British Virgin Islands MSC have dedicated a new, building that will serve as a school in Virgin Gorda. All 15 schools were destroyed in the British Virgin Islands during the recent hurricanes, the new pre-fa...

What really happens below deck...

When I go on a cruise I am always blown away by the amazing service I receive & how incredibly hard the staff work. They are working extremely long hours (up to 100 a week is not unheard of), but always have a smile on their faces and are turned out impeccably. Our lovely hard-working waiters on Splendour of the SeasSo what happens when they do get a little downtime? One thing is for sure there are lots of opportunities to party below the passenger decks in the crew bar. It’s always ...
