Walker - Answered a Question by Ballantyne (08 Feb 09 14:20)

Having travelled on Cunard 5 times, i would not want to sail with anyone else and once you have been spoiled it is difficult to settle for less... even the 4 day Queen Victoria to see what she was like was wonderful - We are trying QM2 in May... the med souns lovely... But I miss QE2 - it was like really awesome to have sailed on such a magnificent ship and our last voyage was in the Grill's and it was unbelievable... I would urge anyone to try them as you cannot get any better.

My Dear Bloggs So you don't believe the results of a survey carried out by this very company, www.CRUISE.co.uk !! Always be sure of your facts before leaping to criticise otherwise you look silly. Now if you look at the list posted by Mr Blyth, who I am sure is a VERY good friend of yours, you will note that P&O, Costa, Fred Olsen, MSC and Thomson don't even get a mention but these are companies that are used by many people who look on this site so what does the Conde Naste list mean to all them, probably not a lot ! Also when you read reviews about Cunard almost all are very positive unlike those written about other companies.

Blyth - replied to Ballantyne (09 Feb 09 09:26)

There is no question of belief in the site primarily there are potential cruisers or even many who have crusied before and want to ask question or questions and this is the primary reason for the site and it is extremely useful in that way. This new venture like the current site is based on solely UK based views when some other guides like Berlitz and Conde Nast base there scores on international opinion so it is not we would disbelief in the information it just has to be seen taking in a a global perspective and many may find the answers they want from it but like any other statistics it is always open to question ........ If you look at the Berlitz guide it scores all cruise ships incluidng P&O and Thomsons etc but they highlight the 20 best as a matter of course as that is the way many parties will look at the survey. One of the Thomson ships scored 4.31 which is quite good compared to the Cunard score but the others in this group don't do so well so they pull the overall score down, so yet another way of looking at statistics.

The 2,500-passenger Viking XPRS, launched in 2008, was named by Conde Nast readers as the fifth-best mid-sized ship in the world, beating out “best of” regulars from lines like and Holland America & Oceania. But here's the rub. "This is not at all a cruise ship," "It's a ferry that basically transports people and cars from points A to B, as fast as possible. Point is don't believe surveys .

Neil & Ida Down - Answered a Question by Ballantyne (08 Feb 09 16:34)

I'm afraid I'm with Bill and Chris here as we all cry, according to who? (or should that be whom). Some once said, there are lies, damn lies and statistics, and that's what I feel here, sorry..... Neil.

My Dear Bill & Ida..............Do you wish to fall on your own swords. So you don't believe the very web site that you spend so much time contributing to ?

That's as maybe but all surveys are suspect and no matter who issues them they are totally reliant on the way a question is constructed. I believe none of them I am afraid not even as a useful tool. My opinion is that the only opinion worth anything is your own and that is always suspect. .... Neil.

Neil, I think Ballantyne is quoting the information based on the survey done by this site. Details were recently shown in the travel trade press under the headline 'Cunard tops consumer reviews on www.CRUISE.co.uk'.The best & the worst, of the crusing industry - according to 12,000 consumers - has been revealed by www.CRUISE.co.uk. The online retailer, one of the UK's largest, has published results of itscustomer reviews for the first time. Results based only on ships with 20 plus reviews:- Best ship - Oceania Insignia Best cruise line - Cunard Best accommodation - Costa Mediterranea Best entertainment - Independence of the Seas Best food - Oceania Insignia Best service - Oceania Insignia Best for families - Independence of the Seas Best shore excursions - Star Princess Worst ship - MSC Poesia Worst cruise line - MSC Cruises Worst accommodation - Thomson Discovery Worst entertainment - Costa Allegra Worst food - MSC Musica Worst service - MSC Musica Worst for families - MV Discovery Worst shore excursions - Oceania Nautica As you've already said, results according to whom. I think you can read anything you like into surveys. Some of the luxury cruise lines' ships only had a couple of reviews, so they were not included in the final results shown above. Click on the blue box headed 'NEW' on the right of the screen to see all the results. I think we all have our favourite ships and cruise lines and if each cruise we take meets our expectations we have an enjoyable holiday. Happy cruising - Jan .

Single Traveller on Celebrity ...

By Dawn Gardener

This week I would like to thank one of my clients for allowing me to use her story regarding a recent experience that she had on Celebrity Cruises. As per her wishes I will not be using her real name but she knows who she is, I think we agreed on ‘mad cat woman’ hahaAnyway, ‘Julie’ is a very professional single woman and likes to cruise. This summer after many previous cruises with the likes of P&O and Norwegian cruise lines, ‘Julie’ decided she wanted...

Brief Moments In Bruges

By Michaela Kilburn

Michaela Kilburn's blog

Day two of my trip on Ventura and once our conference had come to an end, we had the option to visit Bruges, a place I had never been to before and was very much looking forward to visit. We boarded our coach ready for the journey to Bruges. This took around 20 minutes or so then we were off to explore.I loved the feel of the place. It is such a pretty city to be in with cobbled stoned streets and medieval buildings. A popular way to getting around is by Horse and cart. I had to move e...

Are PO getting fussy?

By Neil Holmes

Neil Holmes's blog

P&O cruises have recently announced that they are banning fancy dress on all of their cruises! Even mini cruises which historically are booked by new to cruise passengers and parties who are celebrating.I can understand that if you are new to cruising and you book a taster cruise to see if you like it and there is a group of rowdy Hens, Stags or a group celebrating a birthday for example II can see how this is off putting.Cruising is meant to be fun, enjoyment and create memories. These ...
