By Wright, leeds on 20th Apr 2014
The Ventura cruise ship was clean and the food choice good in the self service restaurant which we used most of the time although the food was not always as hot as we would like. We had good weather for the majority of the cruise and enjoyed doing our own...  Read More >>

I'm hoping to go on a Panama Canal trip next year. Someone has told me that the ships don't go through the Panama during daylight hours! Is this true?

We sailed through the Panama Canal from Pacific to Atlantic last October. The day started early and in brilliant sunshine, but when we had negotiated the first locks, the clouds rolled in and it started to rain. We retreated to our balcony, until that too was awash. I have never seen rain like it or experienced such a thunder storm. However it was over in half an hour and the sun was shining on the rain forest and the trees were steaming. I would not have missed it for the world. It is not called the 'rain forest' for nothing. Judith

www.webcamgalore.com - If you look at these web cams of the Panama Canal, you'll see that most cruise ships are booked to go through the canal in daylight, and there's often crowds of people in the viewing areas, watching them. It costs a great deal for the cruise line to book these cruises, and the Panamanians offer control of web cams for people watching relatives going through- for a price. I doubt a cruise line would go for a night time passage- people go for the daytime experience.- Jo.

Hi , we have just came back from a round trip of Panama canal from Fort Lauderdale on Island Princess. You will need to get up early as we arrived at the locks about 6.00am in the dark which was a spectacular sight, but by the time we finished going through Gatun locks it was broad daylight. A wonderful experience.

Maybe he was crew on a freighter. Either way, it's a great journey so hope you manage to do it (in the daylight).
