The Ventura cruise ship was clean and the food choice good in the self service restaurant which we used most of the time although the food was not always as hot as we would like. We had good weather for the majority of the cruise and enjoyed doing our own...  Read More >>

Doing the Fjords and North Cape from 8th June on the QM2. We prefer to do our own onshore trips with local taxis. As this is our first trip to these ports of call, and we know Norway's very expensive, can anyone who has done this trip advise how easy it was to do their own thing and pass on any tips on what to see and cost etc?

Just got home from this trip, met someone who wanted to visit north cape and coach wasn,t able to accomodate her sons wheelchair so they took a taxi ( arranged by ship ). The cost was £120 for the round trip, this was about equal to the cost of the organised excursion for 2 people ( Thompson Spirit). Agree that all other ports, including Flam railway are possible independently

The only excursion you will need is the North Cape, which is nearly impossible to DIY. It is a wonderful experience and you should go. All the other ports are easy to see under your own steam. In Tromso, the Polaria Museum is a short walk from the ship, but if you want to go up the mountain, I believe you can still buy a ticket that will cover the bus over the bridge and the cable car. In Bergen it is a pleasant walk along the Briggen, to the funicular up Mt Floyen. Try to get there early, before the cruise trips arrive, although the queue may seem long, they move very quickly. Remember to give yourselves time to get back down the mountain, as there will definitely be queues for the journey down. Have a fantastic time. I love Norway.

Did this trip on Victoria last year. The only difficulty for DIY is Honningsvag, for although there is a local bus (Check in the excellent Tourist Office) it didn't meet the time available on our cruise. The Flam Railway is excellent and you can purchase tickets on the train with credit card (No need to join the very long line at the booking office). The other stops are just right for walks, so if you're mobile you don't need to meet the massive cost of everything in Norway.

Apart from Bergen, Tromso, Trondheim and Stavanger, most other places you will visit are small villages and have limited or no local taxis or public transport. If you want to visit North Cape the only transport available will be the ships tour......Brian

Look through the next few pages of questions. This is asked a lot. Alternatively put your port names one at a time into the search box on this site. Failing that, then please specify your ports of call for answers.
