Q: we are going to canaries on 16th oct with fred olsen on boudicca,We paid our final balance three weeks ago then recieved this morning a bill for £108 because of fuel surcharges. I rang the travel agent thinking it was a mistake but agent said they had queried it but fred olsen wont cover the cost as some companies will. I wonder why they didnt tell us before we paid our bill as we would have cancelled, booked another cruise which we could get cheaper. Has this happened to anyone else. 7 answers

It must be a FO policy as we've recently paid for our Celebrity Eclipse cruise in September (13 weeks prior to departure) and they didn't levy a fuel surcharge.

We had a letter about 3-4 weeks before we made our final payment. An annoyance to have to pay extra but it was about £140 on top of the thousands we had committed to pay so we didn't even consider cancelling. If your cruise is in October, why did you pay the final balance so early? We paid ours eight weeks before sailing which I believe is the norm. Your letter is three months before sailing which was the same for us.

We have just book cruise with Fred Olsen for September 2012 and was told by the travel agent that the full balance is now due 17 weeks prior to sailing.

The Terms and Conditions as shown on the Fred Olsen website state - 'The balance of your fare is due to be paid to FOCL 8 weeks before departure and money must be paid in sufficient time for funds to reach FOCL. After this the full fare must be paid at the time of booking. Special payment conditions may apply to special or discounted fares.' - Unless F.O.'s Terms and Conditions have recently changed, or you have booked with a special or discounted fare, your agent's request to pay the balance 17 weeks prior to sailing is totally unjustified.

Thank you for that reply. We've have a great discount so it's worth having to pay 17 weeks in advance - I think, but look what happened to Gills.

We had a letter several months ago from Fred advising of the fuel surcharge on a cruise in December. It was also discussed on the forum so we are expecting it..Carol

I understood they were making fuel charges as some other companies are. Surprised they charged for it separately.
