For the outward journey as an inexperienced flyer you will find lots to distract you during the 60-90 mins your are in the UK departure lounge. I am assuming your cruise starts and finishes in Venice and here its a different story. It is very likely that Royal Caribbean will take you to Marco Polo airport early, you will typically be off the ship by 0900, even if your flight is in the afternoon they will still leave you there for the day. You have 3 options, AAA) Royal caribbean will probably offer an excursion which will drop you and your luggage at the airport mid afternoon, these are usually only available for passengers with flights later than 1500hrs, they are also expensive. BBB) You can elect to make your own transfer to the airport after spending time walking around Venice, you will still have to leave the ship early and collect your luggage but then take the (free) shuttle bus or "People Mover" monorail (1euro) to Piazza Roma where there is a left luggage facility. From here it is an easy & pleasant stroll into Venice centre. You return to Pia Roma, collect your luggage and take the dedicated airport bus from the piazza to Marco Polo (from memory 3.00euro) the buses are every 15/20 mins and its a 20 min journey. CCC) back to your original question. The airport is small & very congeted especially when there are several cruise ships on turnaround; the european flight checkin desks only open 2 hrs before flight departures and there are limited facilities "landside" so if you are taken to the airport early for a late flight you are stuck with your cases for along time. Fortunately it is not all doom & gloom, Marco Polo is one of very few that has an executive lounge, the Travelex Business Centre, which you can access before checkin and this would be a sensible booking. The money you would pay to access will be much less than the savings you will make from free refreshments. ...If you are confident on your own and have the time I would highly recommend plan BBB) particularly if your cruise has not allowed you time to explore this beautiful city. Buy a good pocket map, eg Berlitz, and enjoy your time......Richard B

Richard Although I am not going anywhere near Venice in the next 12/24 months (4 cruises booked though) this information is priceless and I thank you sincerely. It will be filed away for 2013 when I anticipate next cruising out of this fantastic city.

Thank you Richard B, that was very helpful, our flight is late morning so we wont have time to go into venice.
