Q: Hi there
Following our wonderful Eastern Med cruise this year on MSC Melody, we are looking at booking the Western Med cruise on the same ship next year. This year we decided to book the flights through MSC as well but from speaking to other cruisers and looking into it for next year we could save ourselves quite alot if we booked the flights to Genoa independently. The flight into Genoa doesn't land until 13.05 so I am concerned that this is not enough time )allowing for delays etc) to board the shop for a 16.00 departure. Please has anyone any advise on this fine timeline? has anyone managed to do it or do you think we would be better travelling the day before although this would obviously mean that we then have the added cost of a B&B for the night. This flight is with BA which at the moment is considerably less than any other airline (although I realise some airlines have not confirmed flight times / prices for July / August 2011) Also please can anyone advise of the distance to the port from the airport and the average cost of a taxi there.
Many thanks

Most people on the 13.05 flight will be going on the same cruise as you, but would have booked through MSC (and paid far more), only difference is you have to get a cab to the port, but only 5 mins away, and cost about 20 euros (cabs are based at airport). On the plus side, you will be at the port before the others on your flight, as they will be waiting around for the coach (over an hour on last cruise!). It is so much more civilised doing you own arrangements, as cruise operator transfers tend to be chaotic and usually incurr waiting bloody ages for stragglers!.

And just to add to what Wilba has said, you will probably find that as most 7 night cruises have a weekend departure, that by flying out a day early the flights are often cheaper and what you save by not going on a Saturday flight usually just about covers the cost of an overnight stay., Especially if flying with the cheapy budget airlines.

Just remember when you book with the aitline they have to get you there or are responsible for you, the way BA are going at the moment are you sure you want to fly with them, then of course the way things are already 2 travel companies have gone haywire, not trying to put you off but really think of what you want to do...Brian

Hi Brian I hear what you are saying, although the flights booked this year with MSC were with BA but as you say if there is a problem it is the responsibilty of MSC to get us to the ship ontime, just trying to save a few pounds. Thanks for your opinion

Many of us book our own flights whichever cruise line we sail with, BUT flying out on the same day is not the best idea in the world unless (a) you have a good margin of time for flight delays (b) you have a back up plan for alternative flights and/or nearby airports, or (c) Why not do what many of us do? Fly out a day or two earlier and enjoy the port of departure, by putting the money you save on flights to good use. As for Genoa airport to port it is only about a 15 minute cab ride..........BTW you normally have to be boarded at least 90 mins before the ship sails...........Wilba
