Q: Hi, Going to Southern Caribbean on 2nd March 2009 for our Silver Wedding and Birthday celebration. My husband wants to buy me a nice ring. I would like an Aquamarine and diamond ring, not hugely expensive but not too cheap. Can anyone recommend a good place to buy on any of the Islands? Thank you. 19 answers

Be very careful buying a ring in the Caribbean what may look a bargain will in many cases turn out to be a disappointing experience. A large number of these so called bargains have inferior settings and poor quality stones unless you are a jeweller you are taking a big risk and it's a long way to go to return the ring when the stone falls out or you take it to a reputable shop for valuation and find it is worth half of what you paid. You maybe one of the lucky one's but is it worth the risk.

St Maartens and in particular Diamond International are great places to buy. Choose your ring, haggle on price (you can usually get down to 50% of the original price if you hold your nerve) and it will be sized for you while you spend more time sightseeing or on the beach. I've bought a number of fabulous items over the last few years and although I bought them because I liked them, the value of the items have been authenticated in the UK and are significantly higher than the cost paid. Hope you get just what you want.

In my experience, St Thomas is a great place for jewellery. There are many shops right at the port and if you haggle, you can get a great deal, tax-free. Take your time and be prepared to play one shop off against another. They want to sell, so don't be afraid to head for the door if you don't get the deal you want straight away. Just got back from cruise number 11 with Royal Caribbean, with plenty of bargains. Good luck!

Hi there, Firstly congrats, not many of us make to 25yrs. Don't know where your cruise will take you but after just returning from a carribean cruise with the sea princess I can seriosly recommend St Maartens, it has stunning rings and is completely Duty Free! better bling for less cash! always a goodie. If you are going there the ship docks at a little port with a few shops and some nice rings, but if you get the water taxi ($4 dollars each for the whole day ) it will take you into the town ,were jewellers are faling over themselves to get you to buy, so haggle hard and you'll get a fantastic deal. Before you go shopping ask the tour cruise staff, there is usually a shopping specialist who will be able to tell you were to get the best bargain. Good Luck and have a fantastic cruise. Beth

Hi, we have cruised the carib several times and i have bought my wife jewelery from some of the small shops located on ST Thomas. these are located just of the main st in one of the many old pirate stores!! i found huge price differences in the so called Duty Free Malls and the usual dock side malls. Do your research and save hundreds of pounds. We were helped by a lovely couple who run the 19th hole bar on the main st in St Thomas. Good luck KEITH & JEAN

Also St. Maarten. The main street where every other shop was a jewellers. Kicking myself now that I didn't buy a ring where they dropped the price dramatically. Now back in UK I realise what a bargain it was.

Grenada - Cruise ship esplanade Mall. St. Thomas - every other shop is a jeweller. Compare prices! Hagggle like mad! Don't buy on board as they have to report all sles to cusotms - although they say it's duty free - and then you are stung! Good luck.

My husband bought me lovely gold jewellery in St. Maartin. A genuine jewellers called Balerina. My son also recently bought his girlfriend her engagement ring there. Good value, but you must tell them a much cheaper price than they first say, and then be prepared to haggle a bit. They will say no if it is too low and you can then go up ... but never down! good luck!

I did not mention it in my previous answer, but lots of people post their Guarantees and Receipts home to avoid "losing them on the ship"!
