Q: Hi All,

We haven't been on a cruise before but would like to go on an Alaskan cruise taking in the Rockies. This would be with my mother and father as they haven't been abroad a lot and are a bit nervous etc. Mum isn't one for dressing up cocktail style so I am looking for a more relaxed dress code. We live in UK and wonder if anyone can recommend a good package for reasonable price.
I have been looking at the deluxe Princess Rocky tours which look fab but just slightoly too expensive.
Thanks in advance
Julie

If you are interested in Malcolm's suggestion of a Norwegian cruise as a taster, I know that there are a few cruises to Norway leaving from Newcastle this summer which would be an easy departure for you and your parents. Whatever you choose, I'm sure you will enjoy it. Also, as regards your mum dressing up. most (all?) cruise ships have alternative dining arrangements on formal evenings. Thre is usually a buffet style restaurant on board for which you only need to be 'smart/casual.' Good luck Angela

Thanks very much, I appreciate it-see my answer below to Malcolm. Still a bit in the dark but at least we know what we want to do!!!

A specialist cruise travel agent (like this web site) will undercut cruise brochure and cruise line web site prices which will make your idea more affordable. First of all shop around and get some quotes.

...if you want something cheaper and less ambitious the Norwegian Fjords are beautiful and not unlike the Alaskan scenery (I've done both). You can sail to Norway for one or two weeks from a UK port (no flying). Most departures are spring-summer. It might wet their appetite for the 'big one'!

Thanks so much for reply, I have checked out Norway but it's quite expensive compared to Alaska in terms of time, place etc. but also parents wish to go the whole hogg! I have been getting some prices from a friend at Thomas cook and will try Thomsons, have requested something personalised from this site too. We have decided to do Alaska and then the Rockies via train, they are all over £3,000. It will be a brilliant trip but we are a little in the dark with the procedures and protocols etc. For example, how much do you tip or can you pretip? How much are 'extras etc'...sure I will find out with a bit of research. Sincere thanks again Julie
