Q: I am travelling with my husband and 2 daughters aged 11 & 12 on Balmoral cruise 16/7/11.
How many children are booked on the cruise to date? I have seen this question answered by a Fred Olsen rep in other threads.

Hi, this is a great website - very informative. I am travelling on the Balmoral with my husband and 2 children, aged 13 and 5 on 27 September 2011 - from Southampton. Could you advise if there are any other children and if there will be any activities they could do. (wouldn't normally take children out of school however my husband is very ill and I wanted him to go on a cruise before he is unable to).

There are currently booked on board 2 infants, 25 children aged 2-11 and 14 children aged 12-16 years old. Due to this cruise being in the school holidays there is a higher number of children on board. I hope this helps. Regards Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, Head Office, Ipswich

I sailed on Balmoral earlier in the year and 38 children were booked on the cruise. A separate 'Daily News' sheet was produced for the 'Junior Cruisers' giving details of the activities. These seemed to be based around Arts and Crafts, Cookery, Sports, Films, Disco and 'Wii/ XBox. Specific times were allocated for children only sessions in the pools. At breakfast time the younger children accompanied by the junior hosts would parade through the Palms cafe dressed as pirates; it was lovely to see. I would say that most of the children on that cruise were under the age of 10, although I did see a few of a similar age to your two girls. All the children dressed up on formal night and their behaviour was a credit to their parents. I spoke to one mum with a 12 year old daughter and she said they had both thoroughly enjoyed themselves. I think you'll find that some of the Scottish schools broke up for the Summer holidays at the end of June. I hope you all have a great time. Happy cruising - Jan

Thank you very much for your response, it is most appreciated. The girls traveled on the QE2 before she left service, the childrens club was tiny, but both say that it was the best cruise they have been on. So fingers crossed for this one. Thanks again Jan and happy cruising to you too.

I think there will be quite a lot. I think all the 4 berth cabins have sold out, there is definately a kids club. Our daughters are looking forward to it, they are 4 and 7 and my 4 year old is turning 5 on the cruise!

That is great news. My daughters are seasoned cruisers, but its nice to know they will not be totally alone. Its my husbands birthday whilst on this cruise also, but not such a wonderful birthday as becoming 5!

If you check Fred Olsen's website and click on "A to Z" then click letter C and scroll down to children facilities you will see that Balmoral has a Art and Crafts room on board that apparently is only converted into a playroom during main school holidays. Possibility it will not be converted when you are aboard. As Woods of Cambuslang says ring Fred Olsen to put you mind at rest.

Can you not phone Fred's office at Ipswich and ask - I m sure they can tell you.

I would hazard a guess that there won't be a huge number. FO are not a company that attract a large number of children during term time, and most schools won't be starting the summer hols for another week.
