We went on our own steam from Livorno to Florence this summer. We tend to do our won thing in the ports, but Livorno definitely the hardest. When we got off the ship, we found the shuttle bus 9to the town centre) not the station!) wasn't due to leave for 45 minutes, but fortunately we teamed up with another couple and between us we managed to find a taxi and persuade the driver to take us. Can't remember exactly how much it cost but think it was about 20 euros. Trains are fairly frequent to Florence tho. If we went again, we'd probably use the coach from the ship. That was the trickiest place to go it alone. We also visited Rome, Naples, Santorini, Dubrovnik, Nice and Venice and made our own way each time no prob. Hope that helps.
