We have done both of these and here are my recommendations - Florence, this is one of our favourites, it's about an hours coach ride there from Livourno, see the Ponte vechio bridge and the Duomo cathedral, it is so beautiful, but drinks are pricy, you can also so to Pisa from here which is worth a visit. Rome is about 1hr 30 mins from Civitachechia (not correct spelling) we did the Vatican tour which was fantastic, and then a drive around Rome itself, both brilliant and worth a visit.

go to the ncl.com web site, (if you go to ncl.co.uk it redirects you) they list all the ship's excursions and you cn pre book. they will be chaged to cabin onboard account. be warned can be expensive. aternatively search the questions here by destination, ie rome diy by train approx 10 euros each
