Ships tours are always expensive,we have done the caribbean and we did our own trips and they were easy to do and very cheap, outside each port there were mini buses and they asked were we would like to go and we joined other passengers on the buses and then the same bus would arrive to take you back at a given time to the ship just perfect go and have a great time it is so easy just enjoy.

You don't say just where in the carribean your are going, but I have done the christmas and new year cruise twice in this area. We never book on ship, there are always taxis and tours available on leaving the ship, if you said where you were going I could probably help more, be aware if you call at Jamaca it is in my opinion dangerous to travel on your own, and I would take an organised tour from the ship. The trips are much less expensive if you do your own thing. Have a great cruise, be adventurous.

Thank you for your response which we found encouraging. We are visiting Barbados, Trinidad/Tobago, St Vincent, Dominica, St Lucia, St Kitts. We like the sound of the scenic rail tour in St Kitts - do you know anything about doing this independently. Look forward to your reply.

You will probably find that the ship has block booked the train - that was what happened to us, we were unable to book it independently.

We are also doing the same cruise as yourself and I agree that the excursions on the Island Cruise website are very expensive and we certainly could not afford to do one at every stop. The Islands we will be visiting are Barbados, Trinidad, Tobago, Grenada, St Vincent, St Lucia, St Kitts, Antigua, Martinique Dominica. Any advice on what to do and where to go would be great .

Friendliest Countries in the World

By Zara Kelly

The inspiration for this blog comes from some clients who are travelling to Sri Lanka on holiday this year. I visited the pearl in the Indian Ocean a few years ago, and was blown away by how friendly the country is happy to chat to strangers about spices through to cricket, a passion there!I think speaking to locals give you a real insight into the destination. Other than Sri Lanka, the friendliest place I have been to is Japan, where people will literally stop you in the street if you look ...

Fred To Enter The River Market

By Camilla Edwards

Camilla Edwards's blog

Fred Olsen have long been one of my favourite cruise lines, Braemar was the first ship I ever did a ” proper cruise”. When I say proper I mean not a mini cruise or ship visit as it was a 14 night Canary Islands sailing. In the last couple of years Braemar has been one of the lines ships that have started to do river cruising. Although in reality it is not really totally river cruising as the ships have been sailing from a UK port – Dover or Southampton.German Waterways sails ...
