I've done the Med Discovery cruise so can comment only on the ports which are the same!Villefranche and Mahon are easy to do yourselves. Tender boats take you to the pretty town of Villefranche- you can wander around the steep narrow streets, take the little tourist train around the town or catch the mainline train to Nice or Monaco. The ship berths at Mahon and you walk up some steep steps that lead you to the town centre. We did the Rome on your own option which meant we were taken to the city given a map and some information and shown the pick up point. Many people catch the train from Civitavecchia which is a cheaper option. Hope this helps!
Would like more informatiom from bryant or anyone else who has done the rome alone excursion. want to know how they got on with finding places of interest etc. and what they managed to see and do. i am going on the above cruise so any information re the aforementioned excursion would be very helpful - thank you.
I found the above information useful as my husband and i are doing the same cruise september; however i would like to find out more information on the rome alone option so if bryant who answered the above reads this can i ask you to give me details of how you got on and the places you managed to see with this option my email is firstname.lastname@example.org - any information would be greatly appreciated - thank you.
I would also like to know if it is easy to get to the train station to get into Rome and how much likely to cost by taxi compared to "rome alone" tour which seems quite expensive. I want to go into the Jewish Ghetto area and am cruising 11-25 October so if anyone also wants to go to this area which I believe is very near the Vatican etc., then perhaps we can share a taxi?? I can be contacted on email@example.com - thanks.
