There are plenty of taxis & minibuses ready & waiting for you on all islands, they offer the same tours as the ship, but half the cost & usually more fun & more flexible. So I suggest you don't waste your money on the ship's coach tours. The problem is "other activities" like river-tubing, snorkelling, sailboats etc Some can be done more cheaply independently, but you may need to book in advance, some can only be done through the ship. Unless you're confident that you can do them independently & not miss out, best to book these thro the ship. You could get some ideas if you use the blue "find a question" box on the answers page - type in the name of an island as a "keyword" to bring up all Q & A about that island. ..........Chris

I got back yesterday from the Island Stars Eastern Caribbean Cruise. Enjoyed evry minute of it. One tip when going independant touring. Do your homework so that you can be specific when negotiating with taxi drivers. Tell the eactly what you want. They have the gift of the gab and will try to take you on their preferred route and stops. It is cheaper doing your own thing. Four of us managed to get our own cab and driver/guide and had fun. Be warned that most taxis are small minibuses and drivers try to get groups to go together. Ignoring the nearest taxis saves money but do ask what his vehicle is like. We ended up in an 18 year old wreck without air conditioning but a great driver who was about the best guide we had. If you want to go on the St Kitts train best to use the ships excursion. Book early it is very popular. Island Star managed to arrange a third group which just got back on board before the ship set sail.
