We're also going this cruise - doing the round trip (it's also available as 3 cruises - S'ton-NY, Canada, NY-s'ton). I'm afraid this is no help what-so-ever with regard to your questions but I just thought I'd wish you a happy cruise. May bump into you during the cruise. It's our first time on QM2 although been on QE2 before. Regards Andy .

Most would say not good value for money, however we still use these excursions my wife worries if we go indepenant and for some reason get back late the ship will have sailed, will this is true but if you can meet up with some like minded people who go indepentant regularly you will get some good tips from them what to do or not to do.

Hi having done this cruise last year with my family i would say your day in new york just get a taxi into manhatten if the ship docks in brooklyn it costs about 30 dollars one way or go shopping in brooklyn great shops in fulton street mall and there's even a maceys if the ship docks in manhattan you can walk to times square in about 10 mins we did'nt book trips and just did it are selfs as my daughter is in a wheel chair very easy to do, the ship is great and each day they let you no what restuarant you need to book for as it changes daily once you've been on this ship no other one will do i started going on it 4 years ago and 12 cruises later am still full of praise for it, hope you have a great trip carol.

Thanks for a prompt reply perhaps you can answer another question we have been advised that all prices for drinks on board are very expensive indeed they went up 30% in sep last year we went on QE2 in2007 and found the prices reasonable how did you find them? many thanks Carol.

We did this cruise last year (I've posted a review on this site). It was a great time apart from an extra day at anchor in New York due to a passing hurricane! Drinks on board are not expensive, about the same as you would pay in a pub in UK - and it includes a 15% tip. Excursions are varied, but expensive and not good value for money. For example, a trip in St John to see the reversing falls (by the way, they didn't at the time of our excursion - reverse that is) cost $38, while a local company on the quay side were offering a longer tour for $17. However, as you are guaranteed the trip and a good guide, you may consider paying the extra. In New York, there is a free water taxi from Pier 13 in lower Manhattan to IKEA in Brooklyn. It passes the ship, and it's only a 10 minute easy walk from IKEA to Brooklyn Terminal. Very cheap, and a great way to see the ship and New York from the water.

Holmes - Answered a Question by Fray (03 Feb 09 14:02)

It's my experience (& reviews seem to confirm) that almost all excursions on almost all cruise lines are NOT good value! There are out of the way places where you cannot research much, or public transport is poor, so then you are forced to use them, but in USA and Canada there is a mass of info available on the internet so you should be able to go your own way with confidence. I have had several times a rental car waiting, so you can do your own thing for the day; the cost will only be similar to - maybe even less - the price of 2 coach tours, and you are independent. Also as someone said there will be independent tour firms there that will offer better-value trips if you like.
