Williams - Answered a Question by Abela (11 Jan 09 12:32)

When we wen to Heraklion we went to the Knossos excavation and I have to say it was most disappointing. Previously we had been to Ephesus and Pompeii and thought these quite superb but Knossos was nothing in comparison. The rest of the time we walked around Heraklion and that was enjoyable... we went into a couple of Greek churches and they were beautiful and the shops were a mixture of tourist and functional. There is also a large square where one can stop for a drink and catch the rays whilst watching the world pass by. So in summary my advice would eb to go into town and spend a day there. Sorry have never been to Volos.

Kennedy - Answered a Question by Abela (11 Jan 09 21:43)

Hi Abela. I went to Meteora on an excursion from Volos while on the Thomson Calypso last June. The trip was a full day one and well worth the money. It was about a 2 hours bus journey from Volos (with a coffee stop en route). Then there was a bus tour of the area and visits to two of the monasteries. Then we had an excellent lunch in Kalampaka with a very scenic and relaxed journey back to Volos There is no train though you might be able to get a bus from Volos to Kalampaka (the nearest town to Meteora). However the cruise excursion was very good value for money. The other excursion from Volos was the Mount Pellion train which was highly praised by those who did it. This could be done independently from Volos. Its been 10 years since I visited Knossos and it was very impressive at that time. However the one thing which (sort of spoiled it) was the knowledge that the entire site had been semi reconstructed by the team who discovered and excavated it.

Thanks so much for your guidelines!!! seems very interesting and volos is not a frequent port of call infact only few ships do enter volos as part of the itinerary.

After an amazing trip to Lapland and a fantastic Christmas with the family our festivities were cut short as I was taken into hospital just after Christmas. Unfortunately I had to spend nine days there and have emergency operation on New Years day! As you can imagine this was not how I planned to see in the new year but as we all know these things happen and I am very grateful to have been very well looked after and now recovered.I was very well looked after by our amazing NHS, I know they ge...

What No Kisses On My Pillow?!!

By Lily Canderton

Lily Canderton's blog

10 years ago a tradition of the nightly turn down service on ships was a Chocolate Kiss on your pillow but this now seems to be a thing of the past according to a recently returned cruise passengerI hear all the time from passengers that ‘standards are not what they used to be’ with less and less being included and more and more being an added payable extra – Are cruise lines cutting corners just too much?Even the Berlitz Guide author commented that standards are slipping in...
