When we wen to Heraklion we went to the Knossos excavation and I have to say it was most disappointing. Previously we had been to Ephesus and Pompeii and thought these quite superb but Knossos was nothing in comparison. The rest of the time we walked around Heraklion and that was enjoyable... we went into a couple of Greek churches and they were beautiful and the shops were a mixture of tourist and functional. There is also a large square where one can stop for a drink and catch the rays whilst watching the world pass by. So in summary my advice would eb to go into town and spend a day there. Sorry have never been to Volos.
Thank you for your help!! Much appreciated.
Hi Abela. I went to Meteora on an excursion from Volos while on the Thomson Calypso last June. The trip was a full day one and well worth the money. It was about a 2 hours bus journey from Volos (with a coffee stop en route). Then there was a bus tour of the area and visits to two of the monasteries. Then we had an excellent lunch in Kalampaka with a very scenic and relaxed journey back to Volos There is no train though you might be able to get a bus from Volos to Kalampaka (the nearest town to Meteora). However the cruise excursion was very good value for money. The other excursion from Volos was the Mount Pellion train which was highly praised by those who did it. This could be done independently from Volos.
Its been 10 years since I visited Knossos and it was very impressive at that time. However the one thing which (sort of spoiled it) was the knowledge that the entire site had been semi reconstructed by the team who discovered and excavated it.
Thanks so much for your guidelines!!! seems very interesting and volos is not a frequent port of call infact only few ships do enter volos as part of the itinerary.
