Went to alaska 2 years ago on the norweigen sun. We didn't take any tours from the ship, they were horrendsly expensive. We did one in Ketcikan from the port and it was brilliant. There are quite a few in the ports so unless there is someting you that you arereally keen on i would wait untill you get to the ports. They are very aware of sailing times etc and are so reasonably priced.

It is relatively easy to do you our thing in Juneau and Ketchikan - lots of tour operators on the quay side or via the internet offer similar trips to those offered by cruise line- usually fairly standard itineraries - if you wanted something a bit more adventurous it might be worth considering those offered by the cruise line Skagway is a bit more difficult - as it is only a small city less that 800 locals !!! You are ashore for a long time 12 hours and therefore have an opportunity to do a longer trip - would recommend trip in to the Yukon Territory and return via the Yukon and White Pass Railway - a great way to see fantastic sceneryand hear about Alaska life .

Have done a lot of research on this We are goingon 6th Sept NCL Sun Wanted to do close up trip to Tracy Arm Glacier but apparently to dangerous to operate this late in season so will just wait until we get into Juneau and decide then what to do In Ketchikan we have booked Misty Fjord floatplane with Island Wings on recommendation of friend who did it couple of years ago In Skagway we are doing train+bus to Yukon with Dyea Dave This seems cheaper than with cruise line and a more personal trip Dave gets excellent reviews Hoping we have made good choices.

Hello. Bit of a novice on DIY trips. How do you book with Island Wings and Dyea Dave? What sort of prices? Are you going to Ketchikan, Icy Strait, Sitka or Victoria? We are with Celebrity similar dates. Thank you for all your help.

I have done it all by email and it was all very easy check out the websites and send an email Dave charges $50pp for the van part of the trip to or from the Yukon and the train is a bit over $100 I think he did tell me but have forgotten for now but it worked out bit cheaper than thro cruise and I hope its going to be much more personal doing it with someone local I understand he does get booked out so I would contact him asap He does not take deposit or even want credit card details He says he trusts we will turn up and we can trust him to turn up at apponted time! Michelle at Island Wings advised us on best options regarding times of flight taking into consideration our port time and we have paid deposit which is fully refundable if weather too bad to fly on the day Again get in touch asap.

Costa Concordia Dismantlin...

By Sam Smith

The Costa Concordia tragedy seems like so long ago now so I was surprised to hear that the dismantling and recycling of the infamous cruise liner has only just been completed in Italy, marking the official end to final phase of what is considered the largest maritime salvage job in history.I never really thought about what a massive job the whole process has been, the salvage operation took 2 years and the dismantling a further 3 years. The consortium responsible for the Costa Concordias disma...

La Spezia ? where.

By Nicola Milligan

Mediterranean cruises are calling into several ports depending on the size of the cruise ship. So Livorno is commonly know as the port to visit Florence and Pisa. This is a big industrial port so if you have been to both of those cities before not a lot for you to do.We are now finding some ships are calling into La Spezia as an alternative. However the journey can take over two hours each way, so what else is there to do in this area of Italy.I have been recommended by a regular customer a m...

I visited Cuba recently and had an amazing experience. The people, the way of life and culture. I learned a lot of it’s history, more than just what I would have learned at school. It was very interesting to see at first hand what life is like there.Being on an escorted tour I was able to see the real Cuba. Not just a few nights in Havana and then spending the rest of our time on a beach. I visited Cuba in-land, I saw the farms, the tobacco and coffee plants and just how the real people...
