Q: Cruising on the Balmoral in a couple of weeks time and would like to know the extent of the dress code for formal nights. Is it ball gowns and tiaras, simple long evening dress, or cocktail dress. Never cruised with Fred Olsen before, but have been with many other cruise lines and all seem to be different. Dont want to pack what I wont need. Thank you. 7 answers

Dont do a ballgown unless you have to get back to your cabin by midnight before your carriage turns into a pumpkin. Seriously though ballgowns are not necassary. Areally smart and sparkly evening dress would be suffice of course glittering costume jewellry would look great though a tiarra would be a bit ott. Have you considered a fascinator that would be good and suit the occasion. Its great to dress for the night in fact for the whole cruise so listen but use advice as you will. Its up to you have a great time. Fred Olsen cruises are so loverly

Too be honest the tiara bit was a bit of a joke, I should know better lol! I don't own one (wish I did). Its just there are many different interpretations of formal dress code, for instance RCI is different to Cunard, I guess that's why I asked the question. Thanks for your response and happy cruising to you.

I think you will see a mix of dresses from the more traditional black gown to the newer lighter weight evening and cocktail dresses available. Some will have their hair in "up style "which may be adorned with a decorative slide etc. Whilst people adhere to formal nights dress code on Fred Olsen they tend to be very pleasant, relaxed occasions. The last time I wore a black gown was on FO two years ago. Last three cruises were with RCI where black gowns were not so prevelant.

Formal nights on F.O. are certainly formal, with almost everyone adhering to the dress code. You'll find a mixture of outfits, evening dresses, cocktail dresses and sparkly tops with long black skirts. A simple long dress with a bit of added bling will be fine. On the last cruise the majority of females wore long dresses, some accessorised them with a matching or gold/silver shrug, sandals and nice jewellery. I can't remember ever seeing any tiaras on board, but I have seen some really beautiful long dresses. On one cruise we had quite a few girls in their late teens and twenties on board, they wore long dresses every evening. The waiters loved the girls and needless to say they got lots of attention! Enjoy Balmoral she's a lovely ship. Happy cruising - Jan

Sailed on Balmoral twice and found most passengers do follow the dress code from, long evening dresses to trousers and glitzy tops. Personally I wouldn't bother packing a tiara :) Carol

Ball gowns and tiaras are NOt really required on any line these days, although a few passengers might go the whole hog.
