Q: Hi,

We travelled on the Celebrity Eclipse last year for our first ever cruise and loved it, so looking for another one this year.

However we're not formal people at all, and liked the fact that we could go to the buffet restaurant for dinner in our jeans/shorts rather than having to dress up (think we only went to the main restaurant twice in 14 days!)

Looking through the brochures of the other cruise lines it's not at all clear as to which other cruise lines/ships would also allow this.

So, can anyone give me an idea of which other cruise lines would also allow us to have dinner in the buffet in jeans and/or short?

Thanks in advance

As Cruise Fairy says, The Windjammer self service buffet on RCI ships should be fine. RCI own Celebrity, their ships are lovely, although probably not as luxurious as Celebrity. RCI have quite a few casual evenings, and many people then wear jeans in the main dining room too. You are doing the right thing by doing your homework first. As you may have noticed on this site, the subject of dress (or gratuities) can stir up some strong opinions!

Glad you enjoyed the Eclipse, lovely ship.We have used Celebrity a few times now and always enjoyed the experience like yourselves.I thought that Celebrity had a dress code that no shorts or pool attire in any of the public arears after 6pm.As Wilba pointed out your fellow passengers may not have appreciated your casual approach to parts of the ship in the evening. The staff on board would be too polite to ask you to change.

Royal Caribbean have the Windjammer Buffet on their ships. As long as you're not in a wet swim suit you can dress as casually as you want anytime and the food is good.

Hi As far as I am aware no cruise line as an adopted a compulsory dress code for eating in the service section of the buffet for your evening meal. This includes Cunard, Silversea and Crystal probably the three most formal cruise lines afloat (on the latter you could be served your evening meal course by course by your butler in your own suite. I would like to add that your failure to adhere to the suggested dinner may not go down well with some of your fellow passengers and in addition you could be asked to refrain from using certain bars. In view of the latter two points you may wish to try cruise lines which have a more casual approach to cruise attire. Even some the best cruise lines (Seabourn, Azamara and Oceania) have a "club casual" style. In addition many of the mainstream cruise lines such as NCL and Carnival do not have formal nights, although Princess, RCL etc all have formal nights these are not enforced by the line.

NCL and Carnival don't really have a dress code as such, even in the Main Dining Room, although I do think that shorts in the evening is a step too far anywhere onboard a cruise ship..........Wilba
