Q: I have 2 daughters, aged 11 & 12. Both are seasoned cruisers who love P & O ... and surprisingly hated NCL! We are looking at a cruise on Fred. Olsen's 'Braemar' during the school summer holiday. I know they are not generally regarded as a suitable choice for families with children - but will there be at least SOME activities designed for their age group? 7 answers

Hi: I would be very reluctant to go with the kids. I've 2 girls (teenagers) - and have been Fred Olsen twice (2nd time MOST reluctantly). They would refuse point blank to go again. Shame in many ways as its a very good cruse line. Good luck with your decision. !

I have cruised on fred Olsen cruises with my son since he was 8 ( he is now 15). He loves them. Unlike the bigger ships children are allowed to join in with table tennis, deck quoits etc. In the holidays they have children's hostesses who look after the children well. My son has always made friends with other children of a same age and has had a great time. The crew are lovely with the children and I as a parent spend time with him as there are no playstations and computer games to distract him. The bigger boats do have much better facilities for the children but Fred Olsen gives them an old fashioned cruise experience.

I have done most of the lines and Olsens would be the last company I would use with Children I am a sprightly 55 and felt too young for Olsens -the kids would be bored to death From my experience RCI is best for kids and P&O Ventura would be good as well

I'd be reluctant to recommend Fred Olsen for a family with 11 and 12 year old girls, to be honest. I think you'd be running a big risk. Have you thought of the other, bigger players - Princess and Celebrity, for example?

Olsen does attract a number of famalies in the school summer holidays. What did they hate about NCL?

I can say what my wife hated about NCL following our Alaskan Inner Passage cruise on Norwegian Sun. We really objected to being ripped off over drinks prices. The words "extortionate", ""exhorbitant" and "outrageous" come to mind. Furthermore, if you bought a bottle at the shop onboard you were not allowed to keep it ... it was given back to you on your final evening. CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT??!! Also, you could not sit down anywhere without a waiter asking you if you wanted a drink. For a civilised approach to cruising try P & O. Now, they know how to treat their guests with old-fashioned British curtesy. Acceptable prices for drinks, no pressure to sell you drinks and acceptable prices at the dining table. Also, tiping is done in a the traditional way ... i.e. you hand over English curency personally, in an envelope, to your cabin steward and table staff ... now that's my idea of cruising. The informality strangely enough! The main problem though was that they are used to being able to come and go as they please in the P & O kid's club ... and when they saw that mum or dad would have to sign them out on Jade, they refused to go!
