Q: We have a 14 year old son and our previous 2 cruises have been with Royal Carribbean and appear to have alot more going on e.g surf rider, rock climbing etc. We are now looking at a cruise to the Med on the Celebrity Solstice and am concerned what provision there would be for his age group - can any anyone advice? 4 answers

we did this cruise last September and there were just two children on board (14 year old twins). I thought that they would be bored but their Mum told me that they loved it. The staff made a fuss of them and they joined in the shows. Some of the dancer/entertainers took them under their wing and made it a memorable cruise for them. However, they were quite outgoing children and if they had been shy I think it could have been boring for them. Also this was mid-September when British children had returned to school. Good luck. I suspect you might have been OK if he had not previously been on Royal Caribbean. However, the contrast will be so great that I feel you will have one very disappointed son on your hands if you cruise with Celebrity.

Further to my earlier comment, I would suggest that if you want an alternative line, you look at Carnival Breeze and Norwegian Epic, both ex Barcelona next summer. They both have big waterslides and a younger ambience generally.

I have been on 5 Celebrity cruises, admittedly outside of school holiday/peak holiday times, and can count the number of teenagers on two hands on all the cruises collectively. There is the usual teen club/disco, but if there are only a couple of teens onboard don't expect much, if any, support from the appointed staff. Of course I am sure it is a different scenario at peak holiday times, but here's a useful tip. Have a look in the brochure and see how much, (or how little) emphasis is placed on the young or very young. That should give you a clue............Wilba
