Q: I have only just discovered that it costs money to park a car at Southampton for the duration of a cruise! Silly me! But the cruises we have been on before have goen from Harwich and car parking was free. The P&O website directs me to CPS which would cost £140 for a 16 day cruise. holiday extras is a little cheaper at £99. Can anyone advise me whether there is any cheaper way of parking, or if not, the pros and cons of these two alternatives? We are going in April. 8 answers

As other contributors have already mentioned CPS parking is the most convenient option for Southampton cruise ports. I've used them many times and being able to drive to a point adjacent to the check in desks, offload luggage and hand over the car, justifies the cost. I have used the off site car park offered by Holiday Extras, it's seven miles away from the cruise terminal. The disadvantage is that the transfer buses only operate once an hour; we waited ages, both going and coming back and it was a lot of hassle. I've also stayed at the Holiday Inn Eastleigh which you can book through Holiday Extras. A one night stay on a room only basis in a double/twin room, including 15 days' parking at the hotel is being offered at £80 for the period of your cruise. The hotel offers transfers to the airport, but you would have to check if they also operate to the cruise port. We had a lift from the hotel to the port, so I'm afraid I don't know how much it would cost for a taxi, perhaps someone living in the Southampton area could give you an approximate price. Happy cruising - Jan

Thank you all of you for your prompt and helpful replies. I have decided to take the advice of most of you, and have now booked with CPS. I booked the cruise way back last summer, and perhaps if I had known about it then I might have been able to get the parking free. However, we learn by our mistakes, and I shall know to try next time.

before you book with "holiday extras" find out where the site is as i think its a fair way away from the docks and you could have quite a journey when you diembark , i know its a lot to pay but its well worth it for the service you get .

there are some hotels in Soputhampton which offer a combined rate for an overnight stay the night before the cruise and parking for the entire duration. May be worth investiggating (google for hotel + parking in Southampton) try Holiday Inn and Hilton for starters

No parking is free but there are times when free car parking is offered with the cruise. Not much consolation I know but it's always worth aking about when you book and if that agent won't do it speak to another. It may be worth mentioning though that if you go on the net and look up Stoneham Park - Off Airport Parking, it's immediately off the M27 exit 5, they offer car parking at £4-69 a day and a taxi to the docks from there would be about £10 each way, still not cheap but slightly better. BCP is about the same price as your Holiday Extras ..... Neil

CPS are very good. You drive right up to the cruise terminal and almost before you are out of the car your luggage is being unloaded. The next you see it is in your cabin. The Difference in price (£140 vs. £99) is only £41 and considering the cost of your cruise it is minimal BUT considering the convenience and a wonderful, easy start to your cruise well worth the extra money. I must admit that I don’t know about Holiday Extras parking arrangements but suspect they are off-site of the docks and you are bussed in to the cruise terminal. However, I may be corrected on this. Whichever way you decide to park – enjoy your cruise. ...... Andy

The only parking at the terminal is CPS, which you can sometimes get free depending when you book your cruise. It is expensive but is very well organised and secure and it is valet parking. i.e you drive up to the terminal, they take your luggage out, you hand over the car and they take it away and park it.,,,Brian

Check out the local Hotels, if you book in at a Hotel around Liverpool Airport for one night before you fly you can leave your car at the Hotel for the duration of your holiday for a minimal fee.....No Jokes please.
