You need to find out what is available free on board, some ships like Carnival have limited choice of soft drinks free, we found on Royal Caribbean it not worth the cost due to the anti-social waiters who would charge you and be as awkward as possible, also some bars would not accept the card. On a recent Princess cruise it was worth every penny if you do not drink very much beer, wine etc. Princess waiters and bar staff would only put as much ice in your glass as you requested. You really need to speak to someone who has been on the particular ship

I travel with Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines (RCCL), and Celebrity Cruise Lines. The card you are refering to is for $5.00 for each day of the cruise and must be purchased for the entire cruise. You are issued a special insulated soft drink beverage cup and a sticker for your cruise card. You can get a soft drink anytime you want at any location that has soft drinks (each restaurant, and bar, or from a waiter) and any soft drink of your choice. If you wish to not have it, the drinks are $2.00 each and you are given a a can or bottle of your choice. I have a Martini, and there is no soda in it so I do not even have one during the day

The soft drinks package covers only fizzy drinks. Still soft drinks, as well as coffee and tea, are free and permanently available. I've bought the fizzy drinks package before, and found it wasn't really necessary

I thought it good value, especially in the main dining room as I received fresh orange juice, not concentrate. That said, you will need to have at least three soft drinks each day to break even, but, if like me you don't take a lot of alcohol, then the drinks package on QE2 was worth it. Another thing to bear in mind is the non-alcoholic cocktails, I thought they were good value

On her Christmas cruise they had the package available to buy for the first two days only. But beware!! All drinks come by the glass, so if you buy a diet coke, you will get half a glass of ice and only as much coke out of the can that the glass can hold. Therefore, you will often be served with the remainder of somebody elses coke which can be flat. ALWYAS ASK FOR A FRESH CAN TO BE OPENED!! Only one drink per card at any time and if you do not intend to spend $4 dollars a day on soft drinks it does not pay to take this package. Water in the cabin is also not allowed. Try and buy a small bottle of water on board.... I dare you... I never found one in the shop. Read the information leaflet carefully before taking up this package is my advice. Beverley Balogh.
